What is in ON Micronised Creatine

Just one ingredient: creatine monohydrate. Optimum Nutrition says it is micronised for easy mixing, which is why the directions only call for a spoon.

Creatine monohydrate sits in Group A of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Sports Supplement Framework, meaning strong scientific evidence for use in specific situations in sport. The AIS creatine fact sheet explains that your muscles hold only enough creatine to fuel about 8 to 10 seconds of maximal exercise. Supplementing tops up those stores, which improves performance in brief, high-intensity efforts, especially when they are repeated. Combined with resistance training, the AIS says creatine improves strength, muscular endurance and muscle size.

The AIS also notes that about 99% of the safety and efficacy research is on creatine monohydrate powder, and that there is no scientific reason to choose another form. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) describes creatine as considered safe for short-term use by healthy adults, and of little value for endurance sports.

    Who it suits

    • Lifters and anyone following a strength program.
    • Team sport players and sprinters who make repeated short, hard efforts.
    • Vegetarians: the AIS says people with the lowest muscle creatine, such as vegetarians, have the most room to increase it.
    • Anyone who wants an unflavoured creatine to stir into a shake they already drink.

    Who should check first

    • Under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding: Optimum Nutrition says it is intended for healthy adults, so talk to your doctor first.
    • Medical conditions or medication: if you have a medical condition, including kidney problems, or take medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
    • Weight-category athletes: the AIS notes creatine can raise body mass by up to 1 to 2 kg through extra water in muscle, which may matter if you need to make weight.
    • Sensitive stomach: the AIS says some people report mild, temporary stomach upset, and that skipping the loading phase and taking creatine with meals can help.
    • Drug-tested athletes: Optimum Nutrition says it is banned substance tested in accordance with the Informed Choice certification, and Informed Choice lists ON Micronized Creatine Powder with batch test records on its site. Sport Integrity Australia advises looking for HASTA or Informed Sport certification and checking the exact product and batch number in its app. See our guide to supplements for drug-tested athletes.

How to use ON Micronised Creatine

The Australian tub lists a 3 g serve. Optimum Nutrition's directions are to mix it into a protein shake or a glass of your favourite flavoured drink, then stir with a spoon. It is intended for healthy adults as part of a balanced diet and exercise program.

The AIS creatine fact sheet gives two ways to start:

    • No loading: 3 to 5 g a day. Muscle creatine reaches saturation over about 4 weeks.
    • Loading (optional): four 5 g doses a day with meals for 5 days, then 3 to 5 g a day to maintain.

One 3 g serve a day sits at the lower end of that maintenance range. Take it daily, including rest days. The AIS says there is not much data showing creatine works better after exercise than before, but taking it after training with a meal that contains carbohydrate and protein is sensible and helps build the habit. Drink it soon after mixing, because the AIS notes creatine breaks down to creatinine in liquid. Our how to take creatine guide has more detail.

    How it compares

    • Legit Supps Creatine Monohydrate: also unflavoured creatine monohydrate, but Legit's pack sizes work out to 5 g per serve (for example, 100 serves in 500 g), the top of the AIS 3 to 5 g range.
    • Creapure Creatine Monohydrate by ATP Science: made with Creapure branded creatine monohydrate, if you prefer that raw material.
    • R1 Creatine by Rule 1: 5 g of creatine monohydrate per serve, and we list Blue Raspberry and Fruit Punch as well as Unflavoured if you would rather drink it on its own.

    FAQs

How much ON Micronised Creatine should I take each day?

Take the 3 g serve on the Australian label once a day. The AIS describes 3 to 5 g a day as the maintenance dose for creatine monohydrate, so one serve sits at the lower end of that range.

Do I need to do a loading phase?

No. The AIS says you can skip loading and take 3 to 5 g a day, which raises muscle creatine to saturation over about 4 weeks. Loading only gets you there sooner.

Will creatine make me gain weight?

Possibly a little. The AIS notes body mass can rise by up to 1 to 2 kg because creatine increases the water stored in muscle. It returns to normal over 4 to 6 weeks after you stop.

When is the best time to take creatine?

Consistency matters more than timing. The AIS says taking it after training with a meal containing carbohydrate and protein is sensible advice, but there is not much evidence that after is better than before.

Can women take ON Micronised Creatine?

Yes. The AIS creatine guidance is the same for everyone and is not split by sex. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor first.

Is ON Micronised Creatine tested for banned substances?

Optimum Nutrition says it is banned substance tested in accordance with the Informed Choice certification. If you are drug tested, check your tub's batch number with the certifier and follow Sport Integrity Australia's advice before use.
