Whey Protein Hydrolysed
Hydrolysed whey is whey protein that has been partly broken down into smaller pieces, called peptides, during manufacturing. Whey Protein Hydrolysed: buying guide
Hydrolysed whey vs whey isolate
Whey is a milk protein that mixes easily and is digested quickly. The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) notes that whey hydrolysates and isolates are the most researched proteins for resistance training, partly because of how they are digested, and that more of their essential amino acids reach the bloodstream than with soy protein.
Hydrolysing whey is one more processing step on top of making an isolate. It is easy to assume that means faster results, but the ISSN position stand points out that differences in how quickly proteins are absorbed go beyond the degree of hydrolysis alone, and it does not single out hydrolysed whey as building more muscle than other high-quality whey. For most people, getting enough total protein each day matters far more than the type.
Many popular products are blends. Rule 1's R1 Protein, for example, combines whey isolate with partially hydrolysed whey isolate. For a deeper look at isolates versus blends, read whey protein isolate vs whey blend.
Who it suits
- People who want an isolate-based protein that is low in fat. R1 Protein, for example, lists 1 g of fat or less per serve.
- Lifters who like a quick-mixing shake straight after training.
- Anyone who prefers the taste or texture of a particular hydrolysed product. A standard isolate is an equally reasonable choice if you prefer it.
Hydrolysed whey is still made from milk, so it is not suitable if you have a milk allergy. If you avoid dairy, look at plant-based protein instead.
How to compare on the label
- Protein per serve and per 100 g. Per 100 g is the fairest comparison, because scoop sizes differ.
- Protein sources. Check whether hydrolysed whey is the main protein or one part of a blend.
- Carbs, fat and sugar. Compare these on the panel, especially if you track your intake.
- Leucine or BCAA content. Useful when comparing serve sizes.
- Testing. If you compete in a drug-tested sport, choose a batch-tested product (for example HASTA, Informed Sport or Informed Choice) and check with your sport first.
