Tudca: buying guide

What TUDCA is

Chemically, TUDCA is the taurine-bound form of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). UDCA itself is used as a prescription medicine. TUDCA has been used in traditional Chinese medicine, and today it is sold as a supplement, usually in capsules.

What the research does and does not show

A 2019 scientific review describes a large amount of research on TUDCA in cell and animal models, where it acts as a "chemical chaperone" that helps cells cope with stress. The same review notes there are limitations restraining its wider use in people. In plain terms, most of the evidence is pre-clinical, and good trials in healthy people taking TUDCA as a supplement are lacking. TUDCA supplements are not a treatment for any liver or gallbladder condition. If you have concerns about your liver, see your doctor.

How to compare TUDCA products

  • TUDCA per capsule and per serve. Check whether the serve is one capsule or several.
  • Single ingredient or blend. Some products combine TUDCA with other ingredients, which makes doses harder to compare.
  • Capsules per bottle. Work out how many days a bottle lasts at the label dose.
  • Quality. Buy from a reputable retailer and look for a clear ingredient list and manufacturer details.

Other products in this collection

You will also find general health products here. Zinc is one to watch: the adult upper limit is 40 mg a day from all sources, and long-term high intakes can lower copper levels, so a 50 mg tablet is above that limit. Count any zinc already in your multivitamin.

Who should check with a doctor first

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking TUDCA if you have any medical condition, take prescription medicines, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, and tell every health professional you see about the supplements you use.

Tudca: questions and answers

What is TUDCA?
TUDCA, short for tauroursodeoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring bile acid. Chemically it is the taurine-bound form of ursodeoxycholic acid, or UDCA. It has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine and is now sold as a dietary supplement, usually in capsule form. Check the label for the amount of TUDCA per capsule and per serve.
Is there good evidence for TUDCA supplements?
Not yet in healthy people. A 2019 scientific review describes a large body of research in cell and animal models, but notes there are limitations restraining its wider use in patients. Most of the evidence is pre-clinical, so treat bold claims with caution. TUDCA is not a treatment for any liver condition, and anyone with liver concerns should see a doctor.
Is TUDCA the same as UDCA?
They are closely related but not the same. TUDCA is UDCA joined to the amino acid taurine. UDCA is used as a prescription medicine, prescribed and monitored by a doctor. A TUDCA supplement is not a substitute for prescribed UDCA, and you should not change any prescribed treatment without talking to your doctor.
Can I take TUDCA with other supplements or medicines?
Check with your doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you take prescription medicines or have a medical condition. Tell every health professional you see about all the supplements you use. If you combine TUDCA with a multivitamin or zinc product, add up the zinc: the adult upper limit is 40 mg a day from all sources.
Where can I buy TUDCA online in Australia?
You can order TUDCA online for delivery Australia-wide, usually in 2 to 8 business days, or use the store finder to find one of our stores. Single-ingredient options include Beast Labs Nutrition TUDCA 250mg, Condemned Labz Tudca 250mg and Best Naturals TUDCA 250mg, each with 250 mg per capsule. Stock differs between stores, so check the product page or call before you travel.
Is TUDCA safe, and what side effects have been reported?
Safety data for healthy people using TUDCA as a supplement are limited. In a small 54-week trial in people with a serious neurological condition, 1 g taken twice a day was well tolerated, with adverse events no more common than with a placebo. That was a supervised medical study, so it does not prove long-term safety for everyday use. Some labels set limits: Best Naturals says to use it for no more than two months, then take a one-week break. Stop and see a doctor if you notice any unusual reaction.
What is a typical TUDCA dosage?
There is no established supplement dose for healthy people, so follow your label. Most capsules we stock hold 250 mg. Beast Labs and Condemned Labz list one capsule as a serve, while Best Naturals directs two capsules (500 mg) a day on an empty stomach. Kayseari TUDCA is stronger at 1,000 mg per two-capsule serve. Some combination formulas also contain TUDCA, so add up your daily total if you use more than one product.
What is the difference between TUDCA and milk thistle?
They are very different. TUDCA is a bile acid that is also found naturally in the body, while milk thistle is a plant whose extract is mainly silymarin. NCCIH says trials of milk thistle for liver conditions have been conflicting or too limited to draw conclusions, and its most common side effects are bloating, nausea and gas. Some formulas combine TUDCA, milk thistle and other ingredients, so read the full label of any blend and add up each ingredient if you take more than one product.
