What to expect from fat loss supplements

Be realistic. The US National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements says there is little scientific evidence that weight-loss supplements work, and that most studies are small and short. In its summary, caffeine and green tea may help with a small amount of weight loss, CLA, chromium and carnitine with a very small or small amount, and garcinia cambogia and glucomannan have little to no effect. Most products combine several ingredients, which can behave differently when mixed.

The foundations that do the work

The Better Health Channel describes weight as a balance between the energy you eat and the energy you use, and considers about 0.5 to 1 kg a week a reasonable rate of loss. Australia's physical activity guidelines suggest adults do 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate activity, or 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous activity, each week, plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days. See our guides on how to lose weight and fat burner tips.

How to compare products

  • Stimulant content. Many thermogenics contain caffeine. Check the amount per serve and add it to your coffee and pre-workout. Combining caffeine with other stimulants can increase its effects.
  • Stim-free options. Products labelled stim-free or non-stim suit evening use or people sensitive to caffeine.
  • Ingredient doses. Prefer labels that list every ingredient amount instead of a proprietary blend.
  • Testing. Athletes who are drug tested should choose batch-tested products, for example HASTA or Informed Sport certified, and check with their sport.

Safety

The NIH notes that weight-loss supplements can have side effects and interact with medicines, and advises talking to a health professional first, especially if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease or liver disease. Drinking green tea is considered safe, but green tea extract has been linked to liver damage in some people.

Get Fit: questions and answers

Do fat burners actually work?
Only modestly. The US National Institutes of Health says there is little scientific evidence that weight-loss supplements work and that most studies are small and short. Caffeine and green tea may help with a small amount of weight loss. Your eating habits and activity levels make far more difference, so treat a fat burner as an optional extra.
Is green tea extract safe?
Drinking green tea is considered safe, but the US National Institutes of Health notes that green tea extract has been linked to liver damage in some people, and can cause constipation, nausea and raised blood pressure. If a fat burner contains green tea extract, follow the label dose and talk to your doctor first if you have a liver condition or take medicines.
How fast should I expect to lose weight?
The Better Health Channel considers about 0.5 to 1 kg a week a reasonable rate and says slower loss is more likely to be maintained. Losing weight too quickly removes muscle as well as fat. A supplement will not change that maths, so focus on your eating, training and sleep first.
Can I take a fat burner with a pre-workout?
Check the caffeine in both first. Many thermogenic fat burners and pre-workouts contain caffeine, and the Australian Institute of Sport suggests most adults keep to 400 mg a day from all sources and no more than 200 mg at once. The US National Institutes of Health also notes that combining caffeine with other stimulants can increase its effects.
