NAD+

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme your body makes from niacin (vitamin B3) and uses in hundreds of enzyme reactions, including energy production. NAD+ supplements usually provide a precursor rather than NAD+ itself. Supps247 stocks three approaches: MOM Nutrix NMN with resveratrol, Life Extension nicotinamide riboside (NR) and High Performance Nutrition NAD³.

How the three types differ

  • NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide). In a 2022 trial, healthy older men taking 250 mg of NMN a day for 6 or 12 weeks had higher blood NAD+ than the placebo group, with no significant side effects. Small improvements in walking speed and grip strength were reported, but the authors said these need confirming in larger studies.
  • NR (nicotinamide riboside). NR is a niacin-related compound. In a 2018 crossover trial in healthy middle-aged and older adults, six weeks of NR was well tolerated and increased NAD+ metabolism.
  • NAD³ formula. High Performance Nutrition's NAD³ takes a different route: a 312 mg blend of Wasabia japonica, theacrine and copper nicotinic acid per two-capsule serve. It does not list NMN or NR, and the amount of each blend ingredient is not disclosed.

What we don't know yet

Raising NAD+ in the blood is not the same as a proven health benefit. The human trials so far are small and short, so it is still unclear whether these products change how you feel or perform over the long term. For the wider picture, including collagen and vitamin C, see our anti-ageing guide.

How to compare NAD+ supplements

  • Precursor and dose: check whether the product contains NMN, NR or another blend, and how much per serve compared with the amounts studied.
  • Extra ingredients: combinations such as NMN with resveratrol make it harder to tell what each part contributes.
  • Niacin content: the US upper limit for supplemental niacin is 35 mg a day for adults, and nicotinic acid can cause skin flushing from around 30 to 50 mg.
  • Serves per bottle: these are daily products, so compare cost per serve.

NAD+: questions and answers

What is the difference between NMN and NR?
Both are precursors your body can turn into NAD+. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a niacin-related compound, and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is another precursor studied for the same purpose. Small human trials show each can raise NAD+ levels and was well tolerated over several weeks. There is no strong evidence yet that one is better than the other.
Do NAD+ supplements actually raise NAD+ levels?
In small trials, yes. Healthy older men taking 250 mg of NMN daily had higher blood NAD+ after 6 to 12 weeks, and six weeks of NR increased NAD+ metabolism in middle-aged and older adults. What is less clear is whether higher blood levels lead to benefits you can feel, because the studies are short and small.
Do NAD+ supplements cause flushing?
Flushing is linked to nicotinic acid, a form of niacin, at around 30 to 50 mg or more, while nicotinamide does not cause it. NMN and NR were well tolerated in the trials above. Check the label for niacin or nicotinic acid, especially if you also take a B complex or multivitamin, and follow the directions for use.
How long do NAD+ supplements take to work?
The human trials measured changes in blood NAD+ over 6 to 12 weeks of daily use. Feeling a difference is a separate question that research has not answered, so be cautious of products promising quick results. If you try one, take it consistently at the label dose and judge it over a couple of months.
Where can I buy NAD+ supplements online in Australia?
Order online for delivery Australia-wide, free on orders of $99.99 or more, or use the store finder to visit one of our 18 stores. Options include Life Extension NAD+ Cell Regenerator, with 300 mg of nicotinamide riboside per capsule. For single-ingredient NMN, see our NMN range. Stock varies by store, so check the product page or call ahead.
Which is the best NAD+ supplement?
No trial has compared brands head to head, so the best NAD+ supplement for you is one that clearly shows its precursor and dose. Most products provide nicotinamide riboside (NR) or NMN, which your body converts into NAD+, rather than NAD+ itself. Blends that hide the amount of each ingredient are harder to judge. Choose one precursor, check the milligrams per serve against the label directions, and avoid doubling up by taking two NAD+ products at once.
What are the benefits of NAD+ supplements, and do they work?
Raising NAD+ in the blood is the one effect that is well shown. A 2026 systematic review covering 33 human studies found oral NR and NMN consistently did this, yet results for fitness, metabolism, blood vessels and other healthy-ageing measures were mixed and often null. That means you may not feel any difference. If you try one, take it at the label dose for a couple of months and judge it on how you actually feel, not on marketing claims about energy or longevity.
Are NAD+ supplements safe, and what are the side effects?
Short-term trials have found few problems. In an eight-week randomised trial of healthy overweight adults, NR at 100, 300 or 1,000 mg a day caused no flushing and no more side effects than placebo, although the ingredient's maker funded the study. Long-term safety is unknown. Australian rules for NR chloride in listed medicines require a warning that it is not for children under 12, and above 230 mg a day, that it is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Check with your GP if you take medicine.
How much NAD+ supplement should I take per day?
Use the dose on your product's label. Life Extension NAD+ Cell Regenerator is one 300 mg NR capsule a day, which matches the TGA's 300 mg daily maximum for NR chloride in listed medicines. For NMN, listed medicines in Australia are capped at 500 mg a day for up to 12 weeks. Taking more has not been shown to work better, so do not stack several NAD+ products, and add up any niacin from other supplements.
