Health Food: buying guide

Quality matters most with traditional ingredients

Resins, barks and roots come from natural sources, so purity varies. The Better Health Channel warns that some herbal products bought online from overseas have been found to contain dangerous levels of lead, mercury or arsenic, and recommends buying from reputable sources. When comparing shilajit or herbal capsules, look for a clear ingredient list, a stated amount per serve and a brand that can tell you about testing.

Beetroot: the most-studied item here

Beetroot provides dietary nitrate. A 2018 review in the Annual Review of Nutrition found that nitrate, usually given as beetroot juice, can reduce the oxygen cost of steady exercise and improve muscle function, which may help endurance and sprint performance. The IOC consensus statement on supplements lists nitrate with caffeine, creatine and buffering agents as the few with good evidence. Check whether a beet product states its nitrate content.

Organ capsules and vitamin A

If an organ product contains liver, it will supply preformed vitamin A. The US National Institutes of Health sets the adult upper limit at 3,000 mcg a day and warns that high doses in pregnancy can cause birth defects, so check the label and count any multivitamin you take.

How to use these products

  • Follow the label dose and start with one new product at a time so you can tell how you respond.
  • Natural does not mean risk-free. Herbs can cause side effects and interact with medicines, so tell your GP or pharmacist what you take.
  • Moringa powder is unflavoured and can be stirred into smoothies or food.
  • For BCAAs, read do you need BCAAs first.

Health Food: questions and answers

How do I check the quality of a shilajit or herbal product?
Buy from a reputable retailer, read the full ingredient list and check the amount per serve. The Better Health Channel warns that some herbal products bought online from overseas have contained dangerous levels of lead, mercury or arsenic. Ask the brand about contaminant testing, and ask your pharmacist if you are unsure about a product's safety or quality.
Does beetroot help with exercise?
It can. Beetroot is rich in dietary nitrate, and a 2018 review found nitrate, usually taken as beetroot juice, can lower the oxygen cost of exercise and improve muscle function. The IOC consensus statement lists nitrate among the few performance supplements with good evidence. Results vary between people, and many capsules and powders do not state their nitrate content.
Are organ supplements safe?
Check the label first. Products containing liver supply preformed vitamin A, and the US National Institutes of Health sets the adult upper limit at 3,000 mcg a day from all sources. High doses in pregnancy can cause birth defects, so pregnant or breastfeeding women should talk to their doctor before using organ or liver supplements.
Is natural the same as safe?
Not always. The Better Health Channel notes that herbs can be potent and that herbal products are sometimes wrongly assumed to be safe because they are natural. Side effects can include allergic reactions, headaches, nausea and diarrhoea, and herbs can interact with prescription medicines. Tell your GP and pharmacist about every supplement you use.
