Shilajit: buying guide

New to shilajit? Read our shilajit guide for what the research shows, the safety checks that matter and how resin, capsules and gummies compare.

What to expect from shilajit

Shilajit is not listed in the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Supplement Framework, and we have not found strong human research supporting specific health or performance benefits. It is often promoted for testosterone, but over-the-counter supplements contain no hormones, and evidence for raising hormone levels in healthy people is limited. Buy it as a traditional supplement you are curious to try, not as a proven performance aid.

Resin, capsules or gummies

  • Resin. The traditional purified form. You measure each serve yourself, following the label.
  • Capsules. Pre-measured doses that are easy to compare between brands.
  • Gummies. Convenient, but often blended with other herbs. For example, Pure Himalayan Shilajit Gummies Gold also contain ashwagandha, gokshura and black musli.

Purity matters most

Because shilajit is a raw natural material, contamination is the key quality issue. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) warns that some Ayurvedic preparations may contain lead, mercury or arsenic in amounts that can be toxic. A study published in JAMA found that about 1 in 5 Ayurvedic medicines bought online contained detectable lead, mercury or arsenic. Choose brands that can show independent heavy metal testing for the batch you are buying, and avoid unlabelled or unbranded resin.

Safety and who should check first

NCCIH advises talking to a health care provider before using Ayurvedic products if you have a health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are giving them to a child, and not using them to delay seeing a doctor. If a product also contains ashwagandha, NCCIH says ashwagandha should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and is not recommended for people with thyroid or autoimmune conditions. Drug-tested athletes should note that the AIS places testosterone boosters in Group D, a high-risk category, so check multi-herb products with your sport and choose batch-tested options (for example HASTA or Informed Sport certified) where available.

Shilajit: questions and answers

What is shilajit?
Shilajit is a natural resin used in traditional Ayurvedic practice. It contains fulvic acid and minerals, and most products we stock are sourced from the Himalayas. Supplements come as a purified resin that you measure yourself, capsules with a set dose, or gummies, which are often blended with other herbs. Check the label for the amount of shilajit per serve and any added ingredients.
Is shilajit safe to take?
The main concern is purity. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health warns that some Ayurvedic preparations may contain toxic amounts of lead, mercury or arsenic, and a JAMA study found about 1 in 5 Ayurvedic medicines bought online contained detectable heavy metals. Choose brands with independent heavy metal testing, follow the label, and check with your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a health condition.
Does shilajit increase testosterone?
Shilajit is often marketed that way, but over-the-counter supplements contain no hormones, and the evidence for raising hormone levels in healthy people is limited. The Australian Institute of Sport places testosterone boosters in Group D, its highest-risk category for drug-tested athletes. If you are worried about your hormone levels, see your GP for a proper assessment rather than relying on a supplement.
Is shilajit resin better than capsules or gummies?
Not necessarily. Resin is the traditional form but you have to measure it yourself. Capsules give a set dose and are easy to compare. Gummies are convenient but are often blended with other herbs, which changes who they suit. Whichever form you choose, compare the amount of shilajit per serve and look for independent heavy metal testing for the batch.
Where can I buy shilajit in Melbourne?
Supps247 sells shilajit online and in stores across Melbourne, including Springvale, Tarneit and Craigieburn. The range includes resin from Asli Ayurveda and Hillside, capsules such as Double Wood Shilajit Fulvic Acid and Legit Supps Shilajit, and Pure Himalayan Shilajit Gummies Gold. Stock varies by store, so check the product page or call first. Whether you buy online or in person, look for a brand that can show heavy metal testing for the batch, and avoid unbranded resin. Online orders ship Australia-wide, free on orders of $99.99 or more.
What are the side effects of shilajit?
There is not much good-quality information. A 2014 review in Phytotherapy Research found relatively few well-controlled human studies; the author considered purified shilajit safe in the animal and human research available, but called for more trials using standardised products. The bigger known risk is contamination, because the US NCCIH warns that some Ayurvedic preparations contain toxic amounts of lead, mercury or arsenic. Stop using it and see your doctor if you feel unwell, and check with your GP first if you take medication, have a health condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
How should a beginner take shilajit?
Start with the smallest serve on the label and use one product at a time. Resin is measured with a small spoon: Asli Ayurveda Shilajit suggests a pea-sized amount of about 200 to 250 mg dissolved in warm water or milk. If you would rather not measure, Legit Supps Shilajit capsules give a set 500 mg per capsule. Choose a brand that can show heavy metal testing for your batch.
