What is TUDCA?
TUDCA (tauroursodeoxycholic acid) is a bile acid sold as a capsule supplement. Read the label carefully and talk to your doctor if you have a medical condition or take medication.
Do liver detox supplements work?
Your liver and kidneys already clear waste from the body, and there is little good evidence that detox products speed that up. A review cited by the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health found no compelling research to support detox diets for eliminating toxins. The products here are sold for liver support rather than detox, and research on most of them in healthy people is limited. If you are worried about your liver, drink heavily or take regular medicines, see your GP for a check-up and a liver function blood test.
What is in a liver support supplement?
Most products here are built on a few ingredients. Milk thistle comes from NOW Foods (Double Strength 300 mg), Primabolics and Swanson (500 mg). Combined liver formulas mix several ingredients, often with added vitamins and minerals, so check the amount of each per serve and how many capsules make a serve. Milk thistle can cause allergic reactions in people sensitive to ragweed or daisies, and anyone with a liver condition should see their doctor first.
Does milk thistle work for liver health?
The evidence is weak. NCCIH says trials of milk thistle for liver conditions have been conflicting or too limited to draw conclusions, and two NCCIH-funded studies, in hepatitis C and fatty liver disease, did not show benefits from silymarin, its main group of compounds. A small number of studies suggest it may help blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. Liver support products are not a substitute for cutting back on alcohol, staying active and asking your GP for a liver function blood test if you are worried about your liver.
What are the side effects of milk thistle?
NCCIH lists bloating, nausea and gas as the most common side effects. Milk thistle may cause allergic reactions, particularly in people allergic to related plants such as ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or daisies. Because it may lower blood sugar, it could add to the effect of diabetes medicines, and little is known about its safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Herbs and medicines can interact, so check with your pharmacist before starting milk thistle if you take any regular medicine, and stop if you develop a rash or swelling.
Are liver support supplements safe?
A few cautions apply. NCCIH notes that some milk thistle products contain amounts that differ from the label and some have been contaminated, so choose brands that list the exact amount of each ingredient. Combined liver formulas can contain several herbs at once, and some include turmeric, which the TGA has linked to rare liver injury. Avoid taking two liver products with overlapping ingredients. If you have a liver condition, drink heavily or take regular medicines, see your doctor first, and stop and get checked if you notice yellow skin or eyes or dark urine.
How much milk thistle or liver support should I take a day?
There is no standard dose, so follow the label of the product you choose. Products differ a lot: Primabolics Milk Thistle is one 600 mg capsule a day, Swanson Milk Thistle 500 mg directs two capsules two to three times a day, and NOW Milk Thistle Double Strength 300 mg is an extract with artichoke and dandelion. TUDCA products such as Beast Labs Nutrition TUDCA 250 mg state their own serve. Stick to one product at a time, and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you take medicines.
What is the best milk thistle or liver support in Australia?
Check whether the label shows a standardised extract, which states its silymarin content, or whole seed powder, which does not.
