Amino Acid Supplements: buying guide

Find the right amino

  • EAAs: all nine essential amino acids in a drink.
  • BCAAs: leucine, isoleucine and valine, usually sipped during training.
  • Glutamine: a popular single amino acid powder.
  • Beta-alanine: common in pre-workouts, also sold on its own.
  • Citrulline: a stim-free pump ingredient, see pump supplements.

If your goal is simply more protein, a protein powder gives you all the amino acids at once and is usually the best value.

Order online with Australia-wide delivery, free on orders of $100 or more, or visit a Supps247 store in Melbourne, regional Victoria or Brisbane to compare tubs in person and taste flavours before you buy. Members can use our price match guarantee on full-priced items.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or take regular medication, check with your doctor first.

Amino Acid Supplements: questions and answers

Do I need amino acid supplements if I eat enough protein?
Usually not. Protein foods and protein powders already contain all the amino acids. Single aminos such as beta-alanine or citrulline are used for specific training purposes rather than for protein intake.
What are recovery aminos, and do I need them?
Recovery aminos are amino acid drinks, usually EAAs or BCAAs, sometimes with electrolytes or glutamine, that people sip during or after training. Examples here include Legit Recovery EAA Formula, Xtend Original 7g BCAA + Electrolytes, Ghost Intra EAA + BCAA Hydration and Rule One R1 Glutamine. For recovery, your total daily protein matters most, and a protein-rich meal or shake after training supplies every essential amino acid. Aminos suit people who want a light, flavoured drink during long sessions or who do not like protein shakes, but they are optional.
Does taurine work for training?
There is some evidence for endurance, but the effect is small. A 2018 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine pooled 10 studies and found taurine improved endurance performance by a small amount, using single doses of 1 to 6 g or courses of up to two weeks. The authors said more research is needed on the best dose and on who benefits most. Your diet already supplies some taurine, with omnivorous diets estimated to provide about 9 to 400 mg a day, so a supplement is optional rather than essential.
Is taurine safe, and what are the side effects?
Taurine is widely used in energy drinks, and a published risk assessment, cited in a taurine notice reviewed by the US FDA, set 3 g a day as an observed safe level for supplemental taurine. Side effects at common doses are not well documented. Many taurine drinks and pre-workouts also contain caffeine, so check that too: healthdirect suggests healthy adults stay around 400 mg of caffeine a day. If you are pregnant, under 18, have a medical condition or take regular medicines, ask your GP or pharmacist before using taurine.
Which taurine is best, and where can I buy it online in Australia?
Capsules make dosing simple: NOW Foods Taurine 1000 mg is one capsule once or twice a day between meals, NOW also makes a 500 mg capsule, and Life Extension Taurine 1,000 mg is a once-a-day vegetarian capsule. If you prefer to measure your own serve, choose a powder such as Life Extension Taurine Grams or Switch Taurine.
