Gym Equipment: buying guide

Building a simple home setup

You do not need a full home gym to train well. Australia's physical activity guidelines suggest adults do 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate activity, or 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous activity, each week, and include muscle-strengthening activities on at least 2 days. They also recommend breaking up long periods of sitting. Small, portable tools make it easier to fit strength, mobility and Pilates work into a busy week, and a tracker helps you see whether you are getting there.

What is in this range

Adjustable squat wedge

A firm foam wedge that gives you a stable, angled surface to stand on. This one comes in three high-density foam pieces that you can stack or use separately to set the incline. It is used for squats, lunges, Bulgarian split squats and calf raises.

Pilates ring

A light resistance ring that you press or squeeze between your hands, knees or ankles. It adds resistance to Pilates, yoga and bodyweight strength moves for the arms, chest, thighs, glutes and core, and it packs flat into a bag.

Smart fitness band

Smart Band 8 is a wrist tracker that records steps, workouts, heart rate and sleep, and syncs with Android and iOS phones. It is a simple way to check your weekly activity against the guidelines.

How to choose

  • Your training. Choose the wedge for lower-body strength work, the ring for Pilates and home conditioning, and the band if you want to track activity and sleep.
  • Space and storage. All three are compact, but think about where you will train and keep them.
  • Grip and stability. Use the wedge on a flat, non-slip floor, and check handles and padding on the ring are comfortable for you.
  • Compatibility. For the band, check it works with your phone before you buy.

Using equipment safely

Start with lighter variations and slow, controlled reps while you learn a movement, then progress gradually. Keep your wedge on a stable surface, and stop an exercise if it causes sharp pain. If you are coming back from an injury, ask a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist how to fit these tools into your program.

Gym Equipment: questions and answers

What is a squat wedge used for?
A squat wedge gives you a stable, angled surface to stand on during lower-body exercises. It is used under the feet for squats, lunges, Bulgarian split squats and calf raises. The Supps247 Adjustable Squat Wedge Block comes in three high-density foam pieces that you can stack or use separately, so you can change the incline as you get more comfortable.
What exercises can I do with a Pilates ring?
You can press the ring between your palms to work your chest and arms, squeeze it between your knees or ankles for your inner thighs, or press outward against it for your outer thighs and glutes. It is also used in Pilates core exercises. Start with gentle pressure and controlled movement, and build up as your technique improves.
How much exercise should adults do each week?
Australia's physical activity guidelines suggest adults do either 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate activity, 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous activity, or a mix of both each week. They also recommend muscle-strengthening activities on at least 2 days a week, and reducing and breaking up long periods of sitting.
Is a fitness band worth it?
It can be useful if you like seeing your numbers. A band such as Smart Band 8 records steps, workouts, heart rate and sleep, so you can check your weekly activity against the national guidelines and spot long stretches of sitting. Treat the readings as a guide rather than a medical measurement, and check it is compatible with your phone.
