Anti-Ageing: buying guide

What the evidence says

No supplement replaces sleep, activity and a varied diet, but a few ingredients here have useful human research:

  • Collagen peptides. A 2021 meta-analysis of 19 randomised trials (1,125 people aged 20 to 70, mostly women) found hydrolysed collagen improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo, with most studies running around 90 days. The Australian Institute of Sport lists collagen in Group B, meaning emerging evidence.
  • Vitamin C. Your body needs vitamin C to make collagen, and it also works as an antioxidant.
  • NMN and NR. Small trials show these NAD+ precursors raise blood NAD+ and were well tolerated over 6 to 12 weeks. Whether that leads to changes you can feel is not yet established. See our NAD+ and NMN pages for more detail.
  • NAC. Listed by the AIS in Group B alongside vitamin C.

How to compare anti-ageing products

  • Dose versus research. Collagen studies use gram amounts, which usually means a powder, not a capsule. The NMN trial above used 250 mg a day.
  • Single ingredient or combination. Combinations such as NMN with resveratrol make it harder to know what each part contributes.
  • Serves per container. These products are usually taken daily for months, so compare cost per serve.
  • Upper limits. The US upper limit for vitamin C is 2,000 mg a day from all sources.

Safety

High doses of vitamin C can cause stomach upset. Antioxidant supplements may interact with some medicines, including cancer treatments, so check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you take regular medication.

Anti-Ageing: questions and answers

Does collagen powder actually help your skin?
There is reasonable evidence for skin hydration and elasticity. A 2021 meta-analysis of 19 randomised trials found hydrolysed collagen improved these measures compared with placebo, mostly in women aged 20 to 70. Results depend on taking it consistently at the studied doses, and collagen works best alongside sun protection, sleep and a varied diet.
How long should I take collagen before judging it?
Most trials in the 2021 meta-analysis of hydrolysed collagen ran for about 90 days, so give a product around three months of daily use at the label dose before deciding. Take photos in the same light at the start and end, because gradual changes in skin hydration and elasticity are hard to notice day to day.
What is the difference between NMN and NR?
Both are precursors the body can use to make NAD+, a coenzyme involved in energy production. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a form related to vitamin B3. Small trials show each can raise blood NAD+ levels and was well tolerated over 6 to 12 weeks, but research on longer-term benefits in healthy people is still early.
Can I take anti-ageing supplements with my medication?
Check with your doctor or pharmacist first. Antioxidant supplements such as vitamin C may interact with chemotherapy and radiation, and one study found an antioxidant combination reduced the effect of cholesterol-lowering medicines. Bring a list of every supplement you take, including powders and gummies, so they can check for interactions.
What is a TMG supplement?
TMG (trimethylglycine, also called betaine) is a compound found in foods such as beetroot, spinach and wheat. Your body uses it in methylation, including converting homocysteine into methionine. We stock NOW Foods TMG 1000 mg, Life Extension TMG powder and liquid capsules, and Switch TMG. If you take medication or have a medical condition, check with your doctor before adding it.
What is PQQ?
PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) is a compound found in small amounts in foods such as kiwifruit, parsley, green tea and fermented soybeans. It is sold for energy and healthy ageing routines, but human studies so far are small and short. We stock Nutricost PQQ 20 mg in 30 and 60 serve sizes, and Life Extension Super Ubiquinol CoQ10 with PQQ, which pairs it with ubiquinol, the reduced form of CoQ10. Little is known about its safety in pregnancy, so avoid it then, and ask your pharmacist if you take regular medicines.
