BCAA vs EAA: Which Is Worth Your Money?

Table of Contents

If you already eat enough protein, neither BCAAs nor EAAs will add much muscle, and a scoop of whey gives you both for less money. If you do want an amino drink, EAAs are the better buy, because muscle needs all nine essential amino acids to build new protein, and BCAAs only provide three. BCAAs still make sense as a tasty, zero-sugar drink to sip during training.

    What is the difference?

    BCAAs EAAs
What they contain 3 amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, valine All 9 essential amino acids, including the 3 BCAAs
Can they build muscle protein on their own? No, the other six essential amino acids are missing Yes, they provide the full set
    Typical dose 5 to 7 g 7 to 15 g
    Example Xtend Original: 7 g BCAAs, 2.5 g glutamine R1 Essential Amino 9: 7.5 g EAAs including 5 g BCAAs
Cost per serve About $1.00 (Xtend, at today's price) About $2.00 (R1 Essential Amino 9)

    What the evidence says

A widely cited 2017 review by Robert Wolfe concluded that BCAAs alone cannot support a meaningful increase in muscle protein building, because the body needs all the essential amino acids to make new muscle protein. The ISSN says total daily protein intake is what matters most for muscle, at about 1.4 to 2.0 g per kg of body weight a day for most people who exercise. The NIH notes that studies of BCAAs for performance and recovery show mixed results.

When an amino drink makes sense

    • Training fasted or with long gaps between meals: an EAA drink gives you essential amino acids without a full meal.
    • Plant-based diets: EAAs can top up leucine and other amino acids that are lower in some plant proteins.
    • Enjoyment and hydration: many people simply drink more water during training when it tastes good. Xtend adds electrolytes too.

When protein powder is better value

A scoop of R1 Whey Blend gives 24 g of protein with 5 g of naturally occurring BCAAs, at about $2.86 a serve in the 5 lb tub, not much more than an EAA serve at about $2.00. Whey isolates such as R1 Protein WPI give over 12 g of naturally occurring EAAs per scoop. If your goal is muscle and you are not hitting your protein target, buy protein first.

    Our picks

    FAQs

    Is EAA better than BCAA?

For muscle building, yes. EAAs contain all nine essential amino acids, which your body needs to build muscle protein, while BCAAs contain only three. If you eat enough protein through the day, though, neither adds much.

Do I need BCAAs if I take whey protein?

Usually not. Whey protein already contains BCAAs, about 5 to 6 g per scoop in the products we stock, plus all the other essential amino acids. BCAAs are optional, mainly as a flavoured drink during training.

    When should I take EAAs?

Before or during training is common, especially if you train fasted or a long time after your last meal. Total daily protein matters more than timing.

Are BCAAs a waste of money?

Not if you enjoy them and they help you drink more during training. But for muscle growth, protein powder or EAAs give better value, because BCAAs alone cannot build muscle protein.
