What is in CBUM Mass Gainer
Most of the energy comes from carbohydrate. The carbohydrate blend is maltodextrin, Carb10 (a starch made from peas), sweet potato starch, oat flour and quinoa powder. The Cookies & Cream label lists 16 g of sugars and 0 g of fibre within the 196 g of carbohydrate.
The protein blend is whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and micellar casein. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) isolated protein fact sheet describes whey and casein as high biological value dairy proteins, and notes that casein clots in the stomach, which slows digestion.
Each full serve also has 2,500 mg of creatine monohydrate and 2,500 mg of L-glutamine. The AIS creatine fact sheet says muscle creatine can be maintained with about 3 to 5 g a day, so a full serve covers part of that. The AIS also notes that performance ingredients added to protein powders may not be at the best dose, and that extra amino acids such as glutamine are unnecessary when the protein already comes from animal sources. For the basics, see how to take creatine.
So where does a gainer fit? The AIS lists mixed macronutrient supplements (bars, powders and liquid meals) in Group A as sports foods. It says they can give a compact boost of energy and protein during periods of lean mass gain, especially when appetite is not enough to drive the food intake you need. It also warns that energy-dense shakes can be an unnecessary expense, and can work against your goals if you do not need the extra energy.
The label says every batch is tested for potency, purity and integrity. That is Raw Nutrition's own claim, not a sport anti-doping certification such as HASTA or Informed Sport.
Who it suits
- Hard gainers who find it difficult to eat enough food to put on weight.
- Lifters in a planned bulking phase with a high daily energy target.
- Busy people who need a quick, portable top-up between meals when whole food is not practical.
Who should check first
- Allergies: the Cookies & Cream label contains milk, coconut, wheat and soy, and it is made in a facility that also processes sesame, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, crustacean and shellfish oils, and wheat products.
- Medical conditions or medication: 1,070 Calories and 196 g of carbohydrate in one serve is a lot. Talk to your doctor or an Accredited Sports Dietitian first.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding: check with your doctor before using any supplement.
- Under 18: get advice from a doctor or sports dietitian first, and keep food as the base of your diet.
- Already taking creatine: count the 2.5 g in each full serve toward your daily total.
- Drug-tested athletes: Sport Integrity Australia says no supplement can fully guarantee you will not test positive. Check the product and batch number in the Sport Integrity app before use, and read our guide for drug-tested athletes.
How to use CBUM Mass Gainer
The label serve is 4 scoops (275 g). The label's suggested use is one scoop mixed with 8 to 12 fl oz (about 240 to 350 mL) of water, so you do not have to drink all four scoops in one go. Starting with one or two scoops a day lets you see how it sits with you before adding more.
Splitting it up also keeps each shake closer to a typical protein dose. The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) protein position stand suggests 20 to 40 g of protein per serving for most people, and two scoops give about 26 g. A bag holds 20 full serves, so at two scoops a day it lasts about 40 days.
To see how a shake fits your daily target, read how much protein you need per day.
How it compares
- MuscleTech Mass Tech Extreme 2000: a much bigger serve. Its Australian label lists 6 scoops (564 g) giving 62 g of protein and 452 g of carbohydrate mixed with water, plus 3 g of creatine, with about 10 serves in a 5.44 kg bag.
- CBUM Itholate Protein: from the same CBUM range, but a whey protein isolate with 25 g of protein per scoop, for people who want protein without the large carbohydrate load.
- Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey: a standard whey protein with 24 g of protein in a 30.4 g serve (Double Rich Chocolate), a good fit if you would rather get your extra carbohydrate from food.

CBUM Mass Gainer review: our verdict
CBUM Mass Gainer does what a gainer should for genuine hard gainers. A full 4-scoop serve gives 1,070 Calories with 53 g of protein and 2.5 g of creatine, from whey, casein and several carbohydrate sources. Its best feature is flexibility, because you can take one or two scoops at a time instead of the full 275 g serve. The trade-off is that most of the energy is carbohydrate, so if you do not truly struggle to eat enough, it can work against your goals. Start small, count the creatine toward your daily total, and if you only need more protein, CBUM Itholate is the better fit.
FAQs
How many calories are in CBUM Mass Gainer?
A full 4-scoop serve (275 g) has 1,070 Calories, which is about 4,480 kJ. One scoop is a quarter of that, roughly 270 Calories. Values vary slightly between flavours, so check the panel on your bag.
How much protein is in one serve of CBUM Mass Gainer?
The label lists 53 g of protein per 275 g serve, from whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and micellar casein. That works out to about 13 g per scoop.
Does CBUM Mass Gainer contain creatine?
Yes. Each full serve has 2,500 mg (2.5 g) of creatine monohydrate. If you also take a separate creatine product, add the two together and keep your total in line with the 3 to 5 g a day maintenance range the AIS describes.
Is CBUM Mass Gainer good for beginners?
It can be, if your main problem is eating enough. Start with one or two scoops rather than the full 275 g serve, and keep regular meals as the base of your diet. If you only need more protein, a standard whey protein is a simpler choice.
When should I take a mass gainer?
The label does not set a time. The AIS describes mixed macronutrient supplements as useful before or after exercise, or as a snack between meals, when whole food is not practical or appetite is low.
