What is in CBUM Itholate
Whey protein isolate is the first ingredient on the Chocolate Peanut Butter and Milk and Cookies panels. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) isolated protein fact sheet explains that whey is a high biological value protein that is high in branched chain amino acids, including leucine. Isolate is filtered further than whey concentrate, so it is typically about 90% protein by weight, with minimal carbohydrate and fat.
The AIS also makes a fair point: the practical difference between forms of whey is small, with a 30 g serve of any type giving about 21 to 27 g of protein. So it makes sense to choose Itholate mainly on taste, macros and how you will use it.
The rest of the tub is flavour, and that is where flavours differ. Chocolate Peanut Butter adds peanut flour, cocoa, a gum blend and sweeteners (acesulfame potassium, sucralose and steviol glycosides). Milk and Cookies adds MCT oil powder, cookie pieces and mini marshmallows, and its fat (3 g) is double that of Chocolate Peanut Butter (1.5 g). Raw Nutrition describes Itholate as low fat and low sugar, but the exact numbers vary by flavour, so check the panel if you track macros closely.
How does 25 g fit into your day? The AIS suggests spreading protein across 3 to 5 eating occasions, with about 15 to 30 g at each meal or snack, and notes that most athletes reach their daily protein target from food alone. Our guide to how much protein you need per day has the full picture.
Who it suits
- Gym-goers who want 25 g of protein in a quick shake after training or between meals.
- People who enjoy dessert-style flavours and like having plenty of options to rotate.
- Anyone tracking macros who wants a shake with about 4 to 5 g of carbohydrate per scoop (on the panels we checked).
- People deciding between isolate and blends. Our whey protein isolate vs whey blend guide explains the trade-offs.
Who should check first
- Milk allergy: Itholate is made from whey, a milk protein, so it is not suitable.
- Peanut, soy or other allergies: Chocolate Peanut Butter contains peanuts and Milk and Cookies contains soy. Read the "Contains" line on the flavour you pick.
- Lactose intolerance: the AIS notes that the small amount of lactose in whey concentrate may matter for people who are particularly intolerant. Isolate contains minimal carbohydrate, but it is still a dairy product, so see how a single scoop sits with you.
- Vegetarians: Milk and Cookies lists gelatin in its mini marshmallows.
- Kidney disease, other medical conditions or a prescribed diet: check with your doctor or dietitian before adding a protein supplement.
- Drug-tested athletes: Sport Integrity Australia says no supplement can fully guarantee you will not test positive. Check its guidance and the HASTA and Informed Sport databases yourself before use.
How to use CBUM Itholate
The label serve is 1 scoop. Raw Nutrition's product page does not publish mixing directions, so follow the directions printed on your tub.
Timing matters less than your daily total. The AIS suggests a small serve of protein at 3 to 5 eating occasions each day, for example three main meals, a post-training snack and a pre-bed or mid-meal snack. A scoop of Itholate can fill one of those slots, especially after training when a shake is easier than a meal.
Use it alongside a balanced diet rather than instead of meals, and count it toward your daily protein.
How it compares
- R1 Protein WPI by Rule 1: made only from whey protein isolate and hydrolysed whey protein isolate, and it comes in 2 lb and 5 lb tubs if you want a bigger size.
- Legit Whey Isolate: comes in an Unflavoured option as well as flavours, which is handy if you want to stir protein into food.
- Dymatize ISO100: uses hydrolysed whey protein isolate and whey protein isolate, and comes in 3 lb and 5 lb tubs.

CBUM Itholate review: our verdict
Itholate, now labelled BUM Itholate Protein, is a whey isolate for people who want their shake to taste like dessert. It gives 25 g of protein per scoop across eleven flavours, from Maple Waffle to Grandma's Apple Pie, which helps if plainer shakes leave you bored. The trade-offs: macros differ between flavours, with Milk and Cookies carrying double the fat of Chocolate Peanut Butter, the tub holds 25 scoops, and some flavours add peanuts, soy or gelatin. If you mainly want lean numbers or a bigger tub, R1 Protein or Dymatize ISO100 is the more practical buy.
FAQs
How much protein is in CBUM Itholate?
Raw Nutrition lists 25 g of protein per scoop across the Itholate range. Scoop size changes with flavour, from 36 g for Milk and Cookies to 39.7 g for Chocolate Peanut Butter on the panels we checked, so calories and fat differ slightly between flavours.
Is CBUM Itholate the same as BUM Itholate?
Raw Nutrition now sells the product as BUM Itholate Protein. Its website shows the old blue tub and the new white tub side by side and says "new look, same product", so you may see either label.
How many serves are in a tub of Itholate?
The Chocolate Peanut Butter and Milk and Cookies panels both list 25 servings per container. Tub weight varies by flavour because the scoop size changes, so check the panel on your tub.
Is Itholate vegan or dairy free?
No. Itholate is made from whey protein isolate, which comes from milk, and every panel we checked lists milk as an allergen. For a dairy-free option, see our vegan protein powder guide.
When should I have Itholate?
There is no single best time. The AIS recommends spreading protein over the day, with about 15 to 30 g at each of 3 to 5 meals or snacks, and a shake after training is an easy way to fit one in.
