Choose R1 Whey Blend if you want the best value per shake and dairy sits fine with you. Choose R1 Protein WPI if you want the leanest shake with almost no carbs or fat, or if regular whey upsets your stomach. Both are made by Rule 1 and give about 24 to 25 g of protein per scoop. The difference is the type of whey, which changes the price, the lactose and the macros.

What is the difference between whey blend and WPI?
Whey protein concentrate (WPC) keeps more of the milk's natural carbs and fat, including lactose. Whey protein isolate (WPI) is filtered further, so it is higher in protein and lower in lactose, carbs and fat. Hydrolysed whey has been partly broken down. R1 Whey Blend mixes all three types, while R1 Protein WPI uses only isolate and hydrolysed isolate, with no concentrate, creamers or gums.
For building muscle, both work. The ISSN says the total protein you eat each day matters most, and suggests 1.4 to 2.0 g of protein per kg of body weight a day for most people who exercise. A shake simply helps you hit that number.
Choose R1 Whey Blend if…
- You want the most protein for your money. At about $2.86 per serve in the 5 lb tub, it is one of the better-value whey proteins we stock.
- You are bulking or maintaining, and a gram or two of extra carbs and fat makes no difference.
- You like dessert-style flavours. The 2 lb range includes Chocolate Hazelnut, Banana Creme, Chocolate Coconut and Pistachio Ice Cream.
Choose R1 Protein WPI if…
- Regular whey makes you bloated. Isolate is lower in lactose, though it is not lactose free.
- You are dieting and want the leanest possible shake: 0 g sugars and 0.5 g fat per scoop of Chocolate Fudge.
- You compete in tested sport. Rule 1 states R1 Protein is Informed Choice certified, but always check the current certification for your batch.
The 5 lb R1 WPI is $249.95 at the time of writing.

FAQs
Is R1 Whey Blend or R1 WPI better for building muscle?
Both give about 24 to 25 g of protein per scoop, so either works for building muscle when your total daily protein and training are right. R1 Whey Blend is cheaper per serve, while R1 WPI is leaner and lower in lactose. Pick on budget and how your stomach handles dairy rather than on muscle gain.
Is R1 Protein WPI lactose free?
No. Whey isolate is filtered to remove most lactose, so many people who are mildly sensitive to dairy handle it better than concentrate, but it is not lactose free. If you have a diagnosed lactose intolerance or a milk allergy, check the label and speak to your GP or dietitian first.
How many serves are in a 5 lb tub of Rule 1 protein?
A 5 lb R1 Protein WPI tub holds about 71 serves of 32 g, and a 5 lb R1 Whey Blend tub holds about 70 serves, based on the serve sizes on the labels. Serve counts vary slightly by flavour, so check the panel on your tub.
