Does Creatine Make You Bloated or Gain Water Weight?

Table of Contents

Creatine bloating and water weight are real for some people, but the effect is usually small and short-lived. A loading week of about 20 g a day typically adds 1 to 3 kg on the scale, mostly water, and that water sits mainly inside your muscles rather than under your skin. Taking 3 to 5 g a day instead fills your muscles more slowly, so any change is spread over a few weeks, and creatine does not add body fat.

    Loading vs 5 g a day at a glance

Most of the water weight and stomach complaints people link to creatine come from how they take it, not from creatine itself. Here is how the two common ways of starting compare.

    Loading phase 3 to 5 g a day
    How much About 20 g a day in 4 serves of 5 g, for 5 to 7 days, then 3 to 5 g a day 3 to 5 g once a day, every day
Muscles full in About 5 to 7 days About 3 to 4 weeks
Early scale weight Often 1 to 3 kg in the first week, mostly water Slower and spread over several weeks
Stomach upset risk Higher if you take 10 g or more in one go Low for most people
    Approx. cost per day (Legit Creatine 500 g) $2.00 while loading (20 g) $0.50 (5 g)
    Long-term results Same Same

Cost per day is worked out from the bag size on the label, so use it as a guide. Both methods end up in the same place. Loading just gets there faster.

Why does creatine cause water weight?

Creatine is osmotic, which means it pulls water with it. When creatine is carried into your muscle cells, water follows to keep the balance inside the cell. The ISSN position stand notes that early studies saw about 0.5 to 1.0 L of extra fluid during loading, roughly in line with the weight gained.

A 2021 ISSN review of common creatine myths puts the typical gain from a loading phase at 1 to 3 kg, mostly water. It also found that several training studies of 5 to 10 weeks showed no rise in total body water, and that any short-term increase is mainly water inside the cells. In one 8-week study, muscle mass and water inside the cells rose together, so the ratio between them stayed the same.

In plain terms, the water creatine adds goes into the muscle you are training. That is why your muscles may look and feel a little fuller, and why the scale moves even though you have not gained fat.

Is it bloating or is it water weight?

People use "bloating" to mean two different things, and they have different causes.

    • A full, puffy stomach or diarrhoea. This is usually about dose size. In a study of 59 soccer players, diarrhoea was reported by 55.6% of those taking one 10 g serve a day, compared with 28.6% of those taking two 5 g serves. The authors concluded that 10 g in one serve may raise the risk of diarrhoea, so split larger amounts into smaller serves.
    • Looking softer or heavier on the scale. This is the water stored inside your muscles. Research suggests it is mostly inside the muscle cells rather than under your skin, so it should not make you look puffy, though a fast jump on the scale can feel that way.

Undissolved powder can also sit heavy in your stomach. Micronised creatine, such as Legit, Beast Labs and ON Micronized Creatine, has finer particles, so it mixes into a drink more easily.

Does creatine make you gain fat?

No. The ISSN review found that randomised trials lasting from one week to two years did not show creatine increasing fat mass. Some short studies found fat-free mass went up while fat mass stayed the same.

Weight that goes up 1 to 2 kg in the first week of creatine is not fat. Gaining fat takes a calorie surplus over time, and creatine powder has no kilojoules. Legit and Beast Labs both list 0 kJ per 5 g serve on their labels.

How to take creatine with less bloating

    • Skip the loading phase. Take 3 to 5 g a day and let your muscles fill up over about 3 to 4 weeks.
    • If you do load, split it. Take four serves of about 5 g across the day, never 10 g or more in one go.
    • Take it with a meal. The ISSN notes that taking creatine with carbs, or carbs and protein, may help your muscles hold on to more of it.
    • Mix it well. Stir it into at least a full glass of water or a protein shake.
    • Judge your weight over weeks, not days. A quick 1 to 2 kg rise early on is water in the muscle, not fat.
    • Plan around weigh-ins. If you compete in a weight class, start creatine well before a weigh-in rather than loading the week before.

    Which creatine should you choose?

Every creatine form tends to come with water in the muscle, because that is how creatine works. A plain, single-ingredient monohydrate at 3 to 5 g a day is the simplest way to keep things comfortable. The Australian Institute of Sport lists creatine in Group A, its strongest evidence group.

    • Beast Labs Creatine Monohydrate 250 g is $19.95 at the time of writing, about $0.40 per 5 g serve. It is a good, low-cost way to test how creatine sits with you.
    • Legit Creatine Monohydrate is one of our best sellers in the last six months. The 500 g bag is $49.95, about $0.50 per 5 g serve, and suits you once you know you will keep taking it.

Both are unflavoured, micronised monohydrate with nothing else added. Compare more options in our best creatine guide, see how they stack up in our Legit vs ON Micronized vs Beast Labs comparison, or browse the full creatine range.

    FAQs

How long does creatine water weight last?

The quick rise in water usually happens in the first week or two, especially if you load. After that your weight tends to settle, and training studies of 5 to 10 weeks found no lasting rise in total body water. The water that stays is mostly inside your muscles, which is part of how creatine works, so you keep it while you keep taking creatine.

Will I lose the water weight if I stop taking creatine?

Yes, gradually. Once you stop, the creatine level in your muscles slowly drops back to normal over several weeks, and the extra water stored with it goes too. That is why some people see the scale drop a little after stopping. It is water, not muscle or fat, coming off.

Does creatine make your face or stomach look puffy?

Research suggests the extra water from creatine is mostly stored inside your muscle cells, not under the skin, so it should not make your face look puffy. A swollen or uncomfortable stomach is usually from taking a big dose in one go. Keep each serve to 5 g, take it with food and mix it into a full glass of liquid.

Should I stop creatine if it upsets my stomach?

First try a smaller, split dose. In one study, a single 10 g serve caused diarrhoea far more often than two 5 g serves. Skip the loading phase, take 3 to 5 g a day with a meal and mix it well. If you still feel unwell, stop and talk to your GP or a sports dietitian before trying again.

Is creatine water weight bad for weight-class sports?

It can matter if you need to make weight. A loading phase can add 1 to 3 kg, mostly water, within a week. If you compete in a weight class, start creatine at 3 to 5 g a day well before a weigh-in so your weight settles first, or talk to a sports dietitian about timing.
