CLA for fat loss can help, but only a little: the largest review of trials found people lost about 0.09 kg more fat per week than those taking a placebo. Over six months or more, that adds up to roughly 1.3 kg of extra fat loss, and the studies used more CLA than most labels suggest. CLA is stimulant free and usually well tolerated, so it can sit in a cutting stack if your budget allows. Just know that your diet, protein and training will do almost all of the work.
What to expect from CLA at a glance
| Question | What the research says |
|---|---|
| Extra fat loss vs placebo (short studies) | About 0.09 kg a week (review of 18 studies) |
| Extra fat loss vs placebo (6 months or longer) | About 1.3 kg of fat and 0.7 kg of body weight in total (review of 7 trials) |
| Dose used in studies | Median of 3.2 g of CLA a day (range about 2.4 to 6 g) |
| Typical label dose | 2 Nutrex Lipo-6 CLA softgels a day, about 1.6 g of CLA |
| Stimulants | None in the CLA products we stock |
| Common side effects | Upset stomach, nausea, loose stools or constipation |
In plain terms: if your diet and training already have you losing 0.5 kg a week, CLA might add roughly 13 g of fat loss a day on top. You would not see that in the mirror within a month.
What is CLA?
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a group of fatty acids found in small amounts in beef, lamb and dairy fat. The CLA in supplements is usually made from safflower oil and comes in softgels. There are two main forms, often written as c9,t11 and t10,c12, and most supplements contain a mix of both.
CLA is sold as a stim-free option for people who do not want caffeine. That is a fair reason to choose it, as long as you know the effect is small. The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) sums up the human research as showing effects that are small and of questionable clinical relevance.
How much CLA should you take?
The 2007 review that found the 0.09 kg a week effect used a median dose of 3.2 g of CLA a day. The longer trials used about 2.4 to 6 g a day for 6 to 12 months. Label doses are usually lower:
- Nutrex Lipo-6 CLA gives 1,000 mg of a CLA blend per softgel, yielding 80% CLA. The label says 1 softgel in the morning and 1 in the evening, preferably with a meal, which is about 1.6 g of CLA a day.
- Condemned Labz CLA 1000 gives 1 g of CLA oil per softgel, also providing 80% CLA, with 90 softgels per bottle.
- AllMax CLA lists 950 mg of CLA per 1,000 mg softgel (95% CLA), so each softgel carries a bit more CLA.
Matching the 3.2 g from the research would take about four 80% softgels a day, double the Nutrex directions. Do not go above the label dose unless a health professional tells you to. Take CLA with meals, give it at least 12 weeks, and judge it on your waist and progress photos, not the scales from one week to the next.

| Product | CLA per unit (label) | Pack | Price | Approx. per softgel or serve |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nutrex Lipo-6 CLA | 1,000 mg blend, 80% CLA | 90 or 180 softgels | $39.95 / $69.95 | $0.44 / $0.39 |

Prices are at the time of writing. The 180-softgel Lipo-6 CLA is the best value per softgel here. Beast Labs Nutrition CLA is our best-selling CLA in the last six months, but it lists CLA powder rather than CLA oil, so its milligrams are hard to compare directly with the softgels. The softgels contain gelatin, so they are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
Side effects and who should skip CLA
Most people handle CLA well. The NIH notes that side effects are mostly mild gut complaints such as stomach pain, constipation, diarrhoea and nausea, and the 2012 review also listed soft stools. Taking it with food may help.
There are a few cautions. The NIH notes that the t10,c12 form has been reported to worsen insulin resistance in men with obesity and metabolic syndrome, and that some forms may lower HDL (good) cholesterol. CLA may also lower the fat content of breast milk. Skip it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and if you have diabetes, a heart condition or take regular medication, talk to your GP before you start.
Better places to spend your fat loss budget
If you have a set amount to spend each month, CLA should come last. In order of impact:
- A steady calorie deficit. Our cutting diet plan is a simple place to start.
- Enough protein. Protein keeps you fuller and helps you hold on to muscle while dieting. A lean shake such as R1 Protein WPI makes your daily target easier to hit, and our best protein powder for weight loss guide compares more options.
- Resistance training and daily steps. These protect muscle and add to your energy burn.
- Small extras. CLA, L-carnitine and similar stim-free products fit here, with small effects at best. Our best L-carnitine in Australia guide covers the other popular stim-free option and what its research shows.
Is CLA worth it? Our verdict
CLA is a reasonable choice if you want a stimulant-free extra, your diet and training are already consistent, and you are happy with a small effect at best. Choose Nutrex Lipo-6 CLA 180 softgels for the best value per softgel, or the 90-softgel bottle to try it first. Skip CLA if you are hoping for visible changes in a few weeks, if money is tight, or if any of the health cautions above apply to you. FAQs
How much weight can you lose with CLA?
Not much on its own. A 2007 review of 18 studies found about 0.09 kg more fat loss per week than a placebo, at a median of 3.2 g of CLA a day. A 2012 review of longer trials found about 0.7 kg more weight loss and 1.3 kg more fat loss over six months or more. The authors said the evidence does not convincingly show a clinically relevant effect.
How long does CLA take to work?
Studies ran from about 12 weeks to a year, so give it at least 12 weeks of daily use with meals. Because the effect is small, you are unlikely to see a difference from CLA alone in the first month. Track your waist measurement and progress photos rather than daily weigh-ins.
Is CLA a stimulant?
No. CLA is a fatty acid, not a stimulant, and the CLA products we stock have no caffeine on the label. That makes it an option if you are sensitive to caffeine or train late in the day. Always check the label of any combined product, as some blends add other ingredients.
Does CLA have side effects?
CLA appears to be well tolerated by most people. The most common side effects are mild gut issues such as stomach pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea or soft stools. The NIH notes some forms of CLA may lower HDL cholesterol and one form worsened insulin resistance in men with obesity. If you have diabetes, a heart condition or take regular medication, talk to your GP first.
Is CLA better than L-carnitine for fat loss?
Neither has strong evidence. Reviews show small average effects for both, and the Australian Institute of Sport says the evidence does not support carnitine adding to fat loss. Both are stimulant free. If you are choosing one, pick on budget and convenience, and put protein, a calorie deficit and training first.
