Best L-Carnitine in Australia: Liquid vs Capsules
L-carnitine is one of the most popular stimulant-free products on our shelves, and it now comes as flavoured liquids, capsules and unflavoured acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) powders. This page ranks the carnitine products our customers buy most at Supps247, checks each label for the form and amount per serve, and is upfront about the evidence: the Australian Institute of Sport says there is a lack of evidence that carnitine enhances fat loss, and the NIH describes weight-loss results as equivocal. If you still want to try it, here is how the liquid, capsule and powder options compare. Updated October 2026.

Figures are per label serve, from the brand label or brand website. ALCAR and L-carnitine are different forms, so compare like with like.
1. Liquid Carnitine 3000 by Nutrex Research: best liquid
Liquid Carnitine 3000 is the carnitine our customers buy most, selling several times more units than any other carnitine product here. One 15 mL tablespoon gives 3,000 mg of L-carnitine plus 10 mg of vitamin B5, it comes in a range of flavours, and you can take it straight or mix it into water. At 3 g per serve, it reaches the doses used in research, which the AIS says liquid forms rarely do.
- 3,000 mg L-carnitine and 10 mg pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) per 15 mL serve
- 31 serves per bottle
- Label directions: 1 serve between meals, or 30 minutes before exercise on training days
- Sweetened with sucralose, with natural and artificial flavours and two preservatives
Worth knowing: 3,000 mg in one hit is the level at which the NIH says carnitine can cause nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and a fishy body odour, and the AIS protocol splits the daily amount across two meals rather than one dose between meals. The label we checked is Orange Mango; other flavours may differ slightly. Our Liquid Carnitine 3000 guide has more detail.
2. Nutrex Research L-Carnitine 1000: best capsule
L-Carnitine 1000 is the capsule version from the same brand and our best-selling carnitine capsule. Two vegetable capsules give 1,488.1 mg of L-carnitine L-tartrate, which yields 1,000 mg of L-carnitine, with no flavours or sweeteners. Capsules make it easy to split your intake across two meals, which is how the AIS describes the research protocol.
- 1,000 mg L-carnitine per 2-capsule serve, from 1,488.1 mg L-carnitine L-tartrate
- 120 capsules (60 serves); also sold as 60 capsules
- Other ingredients: vegetable capsule, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose
- Label directions: 2 capsules between meals, or 30 minutes before training on training days
Worth knowing: It is the most expensive way to buy a gram of carnitine on this page. At the label serve of 1,000 mg, it sits below the 1.4 to 3 g a day used in the longer studies the AIS describes.

3. EHP Labs Acetyl L-Carnitine: best ALCAR powder
EHP Labs Acetyl L-Carnitine is our best-selling acetyl-L-carnitine. It is a single-ingredient, unflavoured powder with 1 g per scoop and, according to the label, no stimulants, sugar, carbs or fillers. EHP Labs designs it to be stirred into OxyShred or another drink, and it costs less per gram than most picks here.
- 1 g acetyl-L-carnitine per 1 g scoop, 100 serves per 100 g tub
- Single ingredient: acetyl-L-carnitine
- Label directions: 1 to 2 scoops in about 295 mL of water or OxyShred, and no more than 5 scoops a day
- Labelled HPLC tested, with no stimulants
Worth knowing: Plain ALCAR tastes tart and sour, so most people mix it into a flavoured drink. The exercise research summarised by the NIH and AIS mostly used L-carnitine or L-carnitine L-tartrate rather than ALCAR.

4. ATP Science Acetyl L-Carnitine 250G: best big tub
ATP Science's Acetyl L-Carnitine is the big-tub option: 250 g of unflavoured ALCAR with about 125 serves, which made it the least expensive per gram of our picks at the time of writing. It suits people who already know they like ALCAR and want a tub that lasts.
- About 2 g per serve, described as half a scoop in ATP Science's serving suggestion
- 125 serves per 250 g tub
- Take before, during or straight after training, mixed into water
- Labelled vegan, gluten free and non-GMO; sold as a formulated supplementary sports food
Worth knowing: ATP Science warns about the strong smell and compares the taste to lemon water or powdered vinegar once mixed. Weigh your first serve if you are unsure what half a scoop looks like. The brand says it is not suitable for children under 15 or pregnant women.

5. NOW Foods Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500mg: best ALCAR capsule
NOW's acetyl-L-carnitine is the pick for people who want ALCAR without a sour-tasting powder. Each vegan capsule has 500 mg, and the label serve of two capsules gives 1,000 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine from 1,205 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine HCl.
- 1,000 mg acetyl-L-carnitine per 2-capsule serve (from 1,205 mg acetyl-L-carnitine HCl)
- 100 veg capsules, 50 serves
- Labelled vegetarian, vegan and non-GMO
- Other ingredients: hypromellose capsule, rice flour, stearic acid and silicon dioxide
Worth knowing: Our listing also includes a 50-count 1,000 mg option whose label we did not check, so read the serve size on the bottle you buy. Stock is limited, so check the product page first.

How we chose
We ranked carnitine products by units sold at Supps247 over the last six months, combined flavours and sizes of the same product, and kept single-ingredient carnitine products that are live online and in stock. We left out multi-ingredient fat burner blends that contain carnitine, and where two products tied on units we chose the one that covers a different format. Label facts were checked against brand labels and brand websites in October 2026. Value tiers come from price per gram of carnitine or ALCAR at the time of writing, because serve sizes range from 1 g to 3 g: $ is lower than most picks here, $$ is in the middle and $$$ is premium. Brands do not pay for placement.
How to choose L-carnitine: liquid vs capsules vs powder
Be realistic about fat loss. Carnitine helps move fatty acids into mitochondria, which is why it is sold for fat loss, but the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says healthy people make all the carnitine they need, and that weight-loss studies have had equivocal results. One meta-analysis it cites found people lost an average of 1.33 kg more than with placebo, and the NIH says larger studies are needed. The AIS places L-carnitine in Group B, meaning emerging evidence that deserves more research, and says there is a lack of evidence for carnitine enhancing fat loss. Your overall diet and training matter far more.
Know what the research protocol looks like. The AIS notes that four weeks or less of supplementation does not change muscle carnitine. Increases were seen only in studies lasting 12 to 24 weeks, using 1.4 to 3 g of L-carnitine (2 to 4 g of L-carnitine L-tartrate) a day split into two doses, each taken with about 80 g of carbohydrate. That much carbohydrate may not suit someone trying to lose weight. One exception: vegetarians taking 2 g a day for 12 weeks raised muscle carnitine without the extra carbohydrate.
Liquid, capsule or powder. Liquids are convenient and flavoured, but the AIS notes liquid forms rarely reach research doses; Liquid Carnitine 3000 does, at 3 g per tablespoon. Capsules have no taste and are easy to split across meals, but cost the most per gram. Unflavoured powders cost the least per gram, though they taste sour on their own.
L-carnitine or acetyl-L-carnitine. The NIH says these are the two main forms in supplements. ALCAR is L-carnitine with an acetyl group attached, and its milligrams are not equal to L-carnitine milligrams. If your goal is the sports protocol above, L-carnitine or L-carnitine L-tartrate matches the research more closely.
Side effects and who should check first. The NIH says about 3 g a day can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and a fishy body odour, and both the NIH and AIS note carnitine can raise TMAO, a compound that research has linked with heart disease. People with a seizure disorder or kidney disease, those taking regular medication and anyone pregnant or under 18 should talk to a GP or pharmacist first. Drug-tested athletes should read our guide to supplements for drug-tested athletes, as none of these picks shows HASTA or Informed Sport certification. Compare every option in our L-carnitine range.
FAQs
What is the best L-carnitine in Australia?
It depends on the format you prefer. On this page, Liquid Carnitine 3000 ranks first because it is our best seller and gives 3,000 mg of L-carnitine per tablespoon. Nutrex L-Carnitine 1000 suits people who want capsules, EHP Labs and ATP Science are lower-cost unflavoured ALCAR powders, and NOW is the ALCAR capsule. Whichever you choose, keep your expectations for fat loss modest.
Does L-carnitine burn fat?
Not in any meaningful way on current evidence. Carnitine helps move fatty acids into mitochondria, but the NIH says weight-loss results are equivocal, with one meta-analysis finding about 1.33 kg more weight lost than placebo. The AIS says there is a lack of evidence for carnitine enhancing fat loss. A sustainable eating plan and regular training make far more difference than any carnitine product.
What is the best liquid carnitine?
Liquid Carnitine 3000 by Nutrex Research is our best-selling liquid and ranks first on this page. Each 15 mL serve gives 3,000 mg of L-carnitine, which reaches the doses used in research, something the AIS says liquid products rarely do. It is sweetened with sucralose, and 3,000 mg at once can upset some stomachs, so stop taking it if it disagrees with you.
Is liquid carnitine better than capsules?
Not in terms of results. No form has been shown to work better for fat loss, and the AIS research protocol is about total daily dose and taking it with carbohydrate over 12 weeks or more. Liquids are flavoured and give a large dose in one serve. Capsules have no taste and are easy to split across meals, but cost more per gram. Choose the format you will take consistently.
What is the difference between L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine?
Acetyl-L-carnitine, often called ALCAR, is L-carnitine with an acetyl group attached. The NIH lists them as the two main forms in supplements. Most of the exercise research summarised by the NIH and AIS used L-carnitine or L-carnitine L-tartrate, so those forms match the sports protocol more closely. ALCAR milligrams are not the same as L-carnitine milligrams, so compare labels carefully.
How much L-carnitine should I take?
Follow your product's label. For sports use, the AIS describes 1.4 to 3 g of L-carnitine a day, split into two doses taken with carbohydrate-containing meals, for at least 12 weeks. The NIH notes about 3 g a day can cause nausea, diarrhoea and a fishy body odour. If you have a medical condition, take medication or are pregnant, check with your doctor first.
