The best tasting protein powder is the one you enjoy enough to drink every day, and the easiest way to find it in Australia is to try a flavour before you buy a whole tub. Below are four popular protein powders from our range, ranked by how many units we sold in the last six months, with the flavours we stock and how to get a free taste test in store.
We have not added our own taste ratings. Flavour is personal, so we stick to label facts and our sales numbers, and we suggest you taste for yourself.

How we ranked them, and why we do not rank flavours
Our sales figures are counted per product, not per flavour, so we can show which protein powders people buy most, but not which single flavour wins. Stock also changes week to week, and a flavour that is sold out online may still be on the shelf at your local store. Rather than guess, we list the flavours we carry and let you try them.
Taste matters more than it sounds. The Australian Institute of Sport takes a food first approach to protein and suggests about 15 to 30 g of protein at each meal or snack. A shake is simply an easy way to top up, and the ISSN position stand notes that total daily protein matters most. If you dislike the taste, you will stop drinking it, and the tub ends up in the back of the cupboard.
The four protein powders, ranked by sales
1. R1 Whey Blend
R1 Whey Blend has been one of our biggest-selling protein powders over the last six months. Rule 1 lists 24 g of protein and 5 g of naturally occurring BCAAs per serve, from a mix of whey concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate with no amino spiking or creamers. It also has the widest flavour range of the four. In the 2 lb size we stock dessert-style flavours such as Chocolate Fudge, Vanilla Ice Cream, Cookies & Creme, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Birthday Cake, Lightly Salted Caramel, Chocolate Hazelnut and Pistachio Ice Cream.
The 2 lb tub is $109.95 and the 5 lb tub is $199.95, which works out to about $2.86 per serve. If you like the Rule 1 flavours but want a leaner isolate, R1 Protein WPI ($134.95 for 2 lb) was also one of our best-selling proteins over the same period.
2. Primabolics Iso-Ripped
Iso-Ripped by Primabolics is a hydrolysed whey isolate. The original label shows 26.1 g protein, 0.3 g carbs and 0.4 g fat per serve, and both label versions say it is naturally sweetened with stevia, with added digestive enzymes. Primabolics has updated its packaging, so you may receive the original or the newer V2 label. Flavours we carry include Salted Caramel, Vanilla, Strawberry, Choc Milkshake, Peanut Brittle, Choc Coconut, Chocolate Malt, Iced Latte and Choc Mint Cookie. Some flavours come in the 750 g tub only.
The 750 g tub (25 serves) is $119.95, about $4.80 per serve. The 1.65 kg tub (55 serves) is $209.95, about $3.82 per serve.
3. Rival Whey
Rival Whey by Rival Nutrition is the Clean Rival Whey formula. Each 32 g scoop gives 25 g of protein from whey isolate, concentrate and native whey isolate, sweetened with stevia and monk fruit, with no sucralose or acesulfame potassium. It suits you if you prefer natural flavours and sweeteners. At the time of writing, Salted Caramel is in stock online for $64.95, about $2.41 per serve, while True Chocolate and True Vanilla are sold out online.
4. CBUM Itholate
CBUM Itholate is a whey protein isolate from the CBUM Series by Raw Nutrition. Every flavour panel lists 25 g of protein per scoop, with 25 scoops per tub. Scoop size, fat and carbs change with the flavour, from about 0.5 g to 3.5 g of fat per scoop. The range leans into dessert and cereal flavours. Online stock is limited right now: Frosted Frenchie Cookies is in stock for $64.95, about $2.60 per serve.
How to get a free taste test in store
Ask staff for a free taste test at a store that offers it, and they can pour you a small sample of an open flavour. Which flavours are open to taste changes by store and by day, so it helps to ask about the products you are most curious about.
- Find your nearest store with our store finder. We have 18 stores, 17 in Victoria and 1 in Queensland at Richlands.
- Taste it the way you will drink it. If you plan to mix with water, try it with water first.
- Try two or three flavours at most, so they do not blur together.
- Once you have a favourite, order online and use click and collect at a store that offers it, or get delivery with free shipping on orders of $99.99 or more.
For more on how it works, read our guide to tasting protein and pre-workout before you buy.
Simple ways to make any protein shake taste better
- Use very cold water or add ice. Many people find a shake tastes better cold.
- Get the liquid right. Too much water makes a shake thin, too little makes it chalky. Start with the amount on the label and adjust.
- Try milk. It makes a creamier shake, and adds extra protein and kilojoules, which helps if you are bulking.
- Blend it. Vanilla and caramel flavours work well with a banana, frozen berries, oats or a spoon of peanut butter.
- Use a proper shaker with a mixing ball or mesh, so you are not left with lumps.
Which should you choose?
If you want the most flavour choice and good value per serve, start with R1 Whey Blend in the 5 lb tub. If you want a lean isolate that is sweetened with stevia, look at Primabolics Iso-Ripped. If you prefer natural flavours with no artificial sweeteners, Rival Whey is good value per serve. If you love dessert and cereal flavours in an isolate, try CBUM Itholate while stock lasts.

FAQs
What is the best tasting protein powder in Australia?
There is no single answer, because taste is personal. Among the protein powders in this guide, R1 Whey Blend sold the most units at Supps247 in the last six months and has the widest flavour range, followed by Primabolics Iso-Ripped, Rival Whey and CBUM Itholate. The best way to choose is to ask for a free taste test at a Supps247 store that offers it, then buy the flavour you enjoy.
Can I taste protein powder before I buy it?
Yes. Ask staff for a free taste test at a Supps247 store that offers it and they can pour you a small sample of a flavour that is open. Which flavours are available to taste changes by store and day. Use our store finder to locate your nearest store.
Does whey isolate taste different from whey concentrate?
Isolate is filtered further than concentrate, so it has less fat, carbs and lactose. Blends that include concentrate, such as R1 Whey Blend and Rival Whey, keep a little more of the natural milk fat and carbs, while isolates such as Iso-Ripped and CBUM Itholate are leaner. Flavour, sweetener and how you mix it also change the taste, so a taste test is the best guide.
Is protein powder better with water or milk?
Both work. Water keeps the shake lighter and lower in kilojoules, which suits a cutting phase. Milk makes a creamier shake and adds extra protein, carbs and fat, which can help if you are trying to gain weight. If dairy upsets your stomach, try water or a lactose free milk, and choose an isolate.
Which protein powders are sweetened with stevia?
Of the four in this guide, Primabolics Iso-Ripped is sweetened with stevia on both label versions, and Rival Whey is sweetened with stevia and monk fruit with no sucralose or acesulfame potassium. For R1 Whey Blend and CBUM Itholate, check the ingredient list on the product page or tub.
