ATP Science Range Guide: What Each Product Is For

Table of Contents

The ATP Science range covers four main areas: creatine (Creapure and ATPure), collagen protein (NOWAY), magnesium (MAG X4 and ZMAG) and single-ingredient training powders such as citrulline malate, beta-alanine, acetyl L-carnitine and glutamine. If you are new to the brand, start with one of the creatines, because creatine monohydrate has the strongest evidence of anything in the range. Creapure Creatine has been our best-selling ATP Science product in Australia over the last six months, followed by ATPure.

Creapure vs ATPure: which ATP Science creatine?

Both are unflavoured, single-ingredient creatine monohydrate with about 5 g per heaped scoop. Creatine monohydrate is a Group A supplement in the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) framework, and the ISSN position stand found it supports strength, power and lean mass gains when combined with training, at about 3 to 5 g a day.

    • Creapure Creatine Monohydrate uses Creapure, a well-known branded creatine monohydrate. The 250 g tub holds 50 serves, which is about $1.00 per serve. Our Creapure creatine guide covers how to take it.
    • ATPure Creatine Monohydrate comes in a 500 g tub with 100 serves, so it works out cheaper at about $0.70 per serve. ATP Science states it is HASTA certified, with every batch tested for WADA-prohibited substances, which matters if you are a drug-tested athlete. Check the certification for your batch.

Both do the same job. Choose Creapure if you want the smaller tub, or ATPure for the better value and batch testing. Compare more options in our best creatine guide.

NOWAY Collagen Protein: a dairy-free shake

NOWAY Collagen Protein is made from hydrolysed bovine collagen instead of whey, so it is dairy free. A 25 g scoop of Vanilla gives 20.8 g of protein, 1.3 g of carbs and 0.2 g of fat, and the 750 g tub holds 30 serves, about $2.67 per serve. It comes in Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry Milkshake and Unflavoured.

Collagen has a different amino acid make-up to whey. The ISSN notes that protein quality and essential amino acid content affect how well a protein supports muscle building, and most of that research uses whey and other complete proteins. So NOWAY suits people who avoid dairy or want a light shake, while whey is still the first choice if muscle gain is your main goal.

MAG X4 vs ZMAG: magnesium two ways

MAG X4 is a berry-flavoured drink powder with 150 mg of magnesium per 2.5 g scoop, from four forms: orotate, bisglycinate, threonate and citrate. The 100 g tub holds 40 serves. Our post on why MAG X4 uses four forms of magnesium explains ATP Science's thinking.

ZMAG is a vegan capsule and a listed medicine (AUST L 320575). Each capsule gives 100 mg of magnesium, 2.5 mg of zinc, 6.25 mcg of selenium and 25 mg of taurine, with a maximum of three capsules a day (300 mg of magnesium).

Australian adults need 310 to 420 mg of magnesium a day from all sources, and the upper level for magnesium from supplements is 350 mg a day. That means you should not take a full day of ZMAG and MAG X4 together, as that adds up to 450 mg. If you take medication or have a medical condition, check with your GP or pharmacist first. Single-ingredient training powders

These let you build your own pre-workout or top up one ingredient. The evidence varies a lot, so here is the honest version.

    • L-Citrulline Malate: about 3 g of 2:1 citrulline malate per scoop, 83 serves. The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) says current research does not strongly support citrulline for performance.
    • Beta Alanine: a 250 g tub of pure beta-alanine. The AIS counts buffering agents such as beta-alanine among the few supplements with good evidence, though the NIH notes results in competitive events are inconsistent. It often causes a temporary tingling feeling in the face, neck and hands.
    • Acetyl L-Carnitine: about 2 g per serve, 125 serves. The AIS lists L-carnitine in Group B, meaning the evidence is emerging or mixed.
    • L-Glutamine: a 500 g tub of pure glutamine. The NIH says research does not support glutamine alone for exercise performance, and your body usually makes enough.

Which ATP Science product should you choose?

    • Best place to start: ATPure Creatine for value, or Creapure for a smaller tub.
    • Dairy-free protein: NOWAY Collagen Protein.
    • Magnesium: MAG X4 if you like a drink, ZMAG if you prefer capsules. Pick one, not both at full dose.
    • Building your own pre-workout: Beta Alanine has the stronger evidence, while Citrulline Malate is optional.

    FAQs

What is the difference between ATP Science Creapure and ATPure?

Both are unflavoured creatine monohydrate with about 5 g per heaped scoop. Creapure uses the Creapure branded creatine and comes in a 250 g tub with 50 serves. ATPure comes in a 500 g tub with 100 serves, so it costs less per serve, and ATP Science states it is HASTA certified with every batch tested for WADA-prohibited substances. For most people the result is the same, so choose on tub size, value and testing.

Is ATP Science NOWAY a complete protein?

NOWAY is made from hydrolysed bovine collagen, giving 20.8 g of protein per 25 g scoop of Vanilla. Collagen has a different amino acid make-up to whey, and most research on protein and muscle building uses whey and other complete proteins. NOWAY is a good fit if you avoid dairy or want a light shake, but if muscle gain is your main goal, a whey or other complete protein is the stronger choice.

Can I take ZMAG and MAG X4 together?

Not at full dose. Three ZMAG capsules give 300 mg of magnesium, and one scoop of MAG X4 gives 150 mg. Together that is 450 mg, above the 350 mg a day upper level for magnesium from supplements in the Australian Nutrient Reference Values. Pick one product, or use a lower ZMAG dose with MAG X4, and count magnesium from other products too. If you take medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first.

How much creatine should I take a day?

Most research uses about 3 to 5 g of creatine monohydrate a day, which is about one heaped scoop of Creapure or ATPure. Some people start with a short loading phase of about 0.3 g per kg of body weight a day (roughly 20 g for a 70 kg person), split into smaller doses for five to seven days, then drop to 3 to 5 g a day. Loading is optional, and taking it consistently matters more than the exact timing.

Does ATP Science beta-alanine make you tingle?

It can. Beta-alanine often causes a temporary tingling feeling, known as paraesthesia, usually in the face, neck and hands. The NIH lists it as the main side effect and reports no safety concerns at 1.6 to 6.4 g a day for up to 8 weeks. Splitting your daily amount into smaller doses can reduce the tingling. Follow the directions on the label for the serve size.
