These are the high-stim pre-workouts we stock in Australia, ranked by caffeine per full serve: Core Nutritionals Fury leads with 390 mg, followed by Fresh Pre-Workout (360 mg) and JNX The Shadow (350 mg in a single scoop). Every product here goes past 200 mg of caffeine per full serve, which is the largest single dose the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers safe for most healthy adults, so start with half a serve and never take one on top of coffee or energy drinks.
We only ranked products that are in stock and where caffeine is the main stimulant.
High-stim pre-workouts ranked by caffeine
| Rank | Pre-workout | Caffeine per full serve | Full serve | Full serves per tub | Price | Cost per full serve |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Core Nutritionals Fury | 390 mg | 2 scoops | 20 | $59.95 | $3.00 |
| 2 | Fresh Pre-Workout | 360 mg | 2 scoops | 20 | $30.00 | $1.50 |
| 3 | JNX The Shadow | 350 mg | 1 scoop | 30 | $59.95 | $2.00 |
| 4 | Redcon1 Total War | About 320 mg | 1 scoop | 30 | $69.95 | $2.33 |
| 5 | ProSupps Hyde Nightmare | 300 mg | 1 scoop | 30 | $49.95 | $1.67 |
| 6 | RYSE Loaded Pre | 300 mg | 1 scoop | 30 | $79.95 | $2.67 |
Prices are at the time of writing. Cost per full serve is the tub price divided by the full serves on the label. Fury and Fresh are dosed at two scoops, so one scoop gives you about half the caffeine (195 mg for Fury and about 180 mg for Fresh), which makes them easier to start low. Hyde Nightmare is priced differently across flavours.
What else is in each scoop
- Core Nutritionals Fury: per two-scoop serve, 250 mg caffeine anhydrous plus 140 mg Zum-XR extended-release caffeine, 6 g L-citrulline, 3.2 g beta-alanine, 2.5 g betaine, 1.5 g Creatine MagnaPower and 2 g L-tyrosine. Ingredient note: Fury also contains Huperzia serrata extract standardised to huperzine A, so check with your GP first if you take regular medication.
- Fresh Pre-Workout: per scoop, 3 g L-citrulline, 1.6 g beta-alanine, 1 g betaine and 500 mg taurine, with 150 mg caffeine anhydrous plus a slow-release caffeine. The label total is 360 mg for the full two-scoop serve. It is the lowest cost per full serve in this list.
- JNX The Shadow: 350 mg caffeine anhydrous in a small 9 g scoop, with 2 g beta-alanine, 2 g L-citrulline, 1 g taurine, 600 mg betaine and 500 mg L-tyrosine. The most caffeine in one scoop here, but light on pump ingredients.
- Redcon1 Total War: 250 mg caffeine anhydrous plus 100 mg di-caffeine malate (Redcon1 states this adds 70 mg of caffeine), so about 320 mg in total. Also 6 g citrulline malate, 3.2 g beta-alanine and 1 g taurine, in a big range of flavours.
- ProSupps Hyde Nightmare: 300 mg caffeine from green tea extract, caffeine anhydrous and coffee extract, plus 4 g L-citrulline, 2.5 g beta-alanine and 100 mg L-theanine.
- RYSE Loaded Pre: a 300 mg caffeine blend (270 mg caffeine anhydrous plus 30 mg delayed-release caffeine), 4.5 g L-citrulline, 3.5 g beta-alanine and 500 mg choline bitartrate.
How much caffeine do you actually need?
More caffeine is not the same as a better workout. The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) says caffeine improves exercise performance at about 3 to 6 mg per kg of body weight, and that higher doses mainly add side effects. For a 70 kg adult that is about 210 to 420 mg, so a single full serve of any product here sits in the middle to top of that range.
EFSA considers single doses of up to 200 mg, and up to 400 mg a day from all sources, safe for most healthy adults. Coffee, energy drinks, cola and some fat burners all count towards that daily total. If you already drink two coffees a day, a full serve of Fury or The Shadow would take you well past it.
How to use a high-stim pre-workout safely
- Start with half a serve, even if you drink a lot of coffee. One scoop of a two-scoop product, or half a scoop of a single-scoop product.
- Add up all your caffeine for the day before you go up to a full serve.
- Do not stack it with coffee, energy drinks or another stimulant product.
- Take it about 30 to 60 minutes before training. A sleep study found caffeine taken six hours before bed still cut sleep by about an hour, so keep it to earlier in the day.
- Expect a harmless tingle from beta-alanine. Splitting the scoop or using a smaller serve usually eases it.
- Skip stimulant pre-workouts if you are under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, have a heart condition or high blood pressure, or take regular medication, unless your GP says it is OK.
- If you are drug tested in sport, check that the product is batch tested and talk to your sport about it before you use it.

FAQs
What is the strongest pre-workout in Australia?
Of the high-stim pre-workouts we rank, Core Nutritionals Fury has the most caffeine at 390 mg per two-scoop serve, followed by Fresh Pre-Workout at 360 mg per two scoops and JNX The Shadow at 350 mg in a single scoop. Strongest is not the same as best, though. Research suggests about 3 to 6 mg of caffeine per kg of body weight is enough for most people, and extra caffeine mostly adds jitters and poor sleep.
How much caffeine is safe in a pre-workout?
EFSA considers single doses of up to 200 mg, and up to 400 mg a day from all sources, safe for most healthy adults who are not pregnant. Every product in this list has more than 200 mg in a full serve, so start with half a serve and count coffee, energy drinks and other stimulant products towards your daily total.
Is a high-stim pre-workout better than a regular one?
Not for most people. Caffeine works at moderate doses, and the ISSN position stand found no clear extra benefit from very high doses, while side effects such as a racing heart, anxiety and poor sleep become more likely. A regular pre-workout with 150 to 250 mg of caffeine, or a stim-free pump formula, suits most lifters. High-stim products are for experienced users who already know how they handle caffeine.
Can I take a high-stim pre-workout at night?
It is best not to. Caffeine stays in your system for hours, and one study found a dose taken six hours before bed still cut total sleep by about an hour. If you train in the evening, try a stimulant-free pre-workout instead, or take half a serve and train earlier where you can.
Why does my pre-workout make my skin tingle?
That pins-and-needles feeling is usually beta-alanine. The ISSN says the tingle (called paraesthesia) is harmless and fades on its own, usually within an hour or two. All six products here contain beta-alanine, with up to 3.5 g per serve. If it bothers you, take a smaller serve or choose a product with less beta-alanine.
