Best Fish Oil and Omega-3 Supplements in Australia

Fish oil is easy to buy and easy to compare badly, because the big number on the front of the bottle is usually the weight of the oil, not the omega-3s inside it. This page ranks the best fish oil and omega-3 supplements in Australia that we stock, starting with the ones our customers bought most in our stores and online over the last six months. We then checked each label for EPA and DHA per capsule, capsules per day and extras such as vitamins A, D or E. Updated October 2026.

1. NOW Foods Omega-3 1000 mg: best overall

NOW Omega-3 is our best-selling fish oil by a wide margin. Each softgel holds 1,000 mg of molecularly distilled fish oil with 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA. NOW says the oil is tested for contaminants such as PCBs, dioxins, mercury and other heavy metals, and that it passed the GOED randomised testing program in 2022.

  • Per 2 softgel serve: 2,000 mg fish oil, 360 mg EPA and 240 mg DHA
  • Suggested use: 2 softgels twice daily with food
  • Fish oil from anchovies, sardines and tuna, in a bovine gelatin softgel with vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol)
  • 100 and 200 softgel bottles (50 and 100 serves)

Worth knowing: At the full suggested use of four softgels a day, a 100 softgel bottle lasts 25 days, so the 200 softgel bottle is better value. The bovine gelatin softgel means it is not suitable for vegetarians.

2. Rule 1 Fish Oil: best one-a-day

Rule 1 Fish Oil keeps things simple: one softgel a day with a meal. Each softgel has 1 g of anchovy fish oil with 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA, and the 100 softgel bottle lasts just over three months at that dose. It is also good value per gram of EPA and DHA.

  • 1 g fish oil per softgel: 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA
  • Directions: 1 softgel daily with food
  • 100 softgels, 100 serves
  • Other ingredients: gelatin, glycerin, purified water and vitamin E (DL-alpha tocopheryl acetate); contains anchovy

Worth knowing: One softgel gives 300 mg of EPA and DHA, below the Australian suggested dietary targets in the FAQs, so it suits people who also eat oily fish. The gelatin softgel is not vegetarian.

3. Condemned Labz Fish Oil: best with DPA on the label

Condemned Labz (CNDMND) Fish Oil is our third best-selling fish oil. It is a standard 18/12 fish oil, meaning the oil is 18% EPA and 12% DHA, so each 1,000 mg softgel gives 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA. Unlike most labels here, it also lists 36 mg of DPA, another long-chain omega-3 that Australian nutrient reference values count together with EPA and DHA.

  • Per softgel: 1,000 mg fish oil, 180 mg EPA, 120 mg DHA and 36 mg DPA
  • 1 softgel per serve, 90 serves per bottle
  • Fish oil from anchovy, herring and mackerel
  • Other ingredients: gelatin, glycerin, water, natural caramel colour and titanium dioxide

Worth knowing: It is the dearest of the standard-strength picks per gram of EPA and DHA. The label panel we checked shows the serve size but not how many softgels to take each day, so follow the directions on your bottle.

4. AllMax Omega 3: best big bottle

AllMax Omega 3 comes in a 180 softgel bottle, making it one of the better-value fish oils here. Each softgel provides 1,000 mg of fish oil concentrate with 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA, and the front label says the flavour is neutralised for no fishy aftertaste.

  • Per softgel: 1,000 mg fish oil concentrate, 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA
  • Directions: 1 softgel two to three times daily
  • 180 softgels, which lasts 60 to 90 days at the suggested use
  • Other ingredients: gelatin, glycerin and purified water; contains anchovies and/or sardines

Worth knowing: You need two or three softgels a day to reach 600 to 900 mg of EPA and DHA. The label says it is made in a facility that also handles crustaceans and shellfish, which matters if you have a shellfish allergy.

5. 21st Century Fish Oil: best small bottle

21st Century Fish Oil is a low-commitment way to try fish oil. The 60 softgel bottle has 1,000 mg of fish oil concentrate per softgel, providing 300 mg of total omega-3 fatty acids, and the label lets you take one to three a day with meals.

  • Per softgel: 1,000 mg fish oil concentrate, 300 mg total omega-3 (including EPA and DHA)
  • Directions: 1 softgel with any meal, up to three times daily
  • 60 softgels
  • Other ingredients include gelatin, glycerin, refined soybean oil and mixed tocopherols

Worth knowing: The label gives total omega-3 but does not split it into EPA and DHA, which makes it harder to compare. It contains soybean oil, and at three softgels a day the bottle lasts 20 days.

6. NOW Foods Cod Liver Oil 1000 mg: best with vitamins A and D

Cod liver oil is lower in EPA and DHA than regular fish oil, but the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (NIH ODS) notes it also provides vitamins A and D. NOW's extra strength version gives 70 mg EPA and 100 mg DHA per softgel, plus 300 mcg of vitamin A and 10 mcg (400 IU) of vitamin D, and one softgel a day is the full dose.

  • Per softgel: 1,000 mg cod liver oil, 70 mg EPA and 100 mg DHA
  • Vitamin A 300 mcg and vitamin D 10 mcg (400 IU) per softgel
  • Directions: 1 softgel daily with a meal; 90 and 180 softgel bottles
  • NOW says it is tested for PCBs, dioxins, mercury and other heavy metals

Worth knowing: It gives a little over half the EPA and DHA of a standard fish oil softgel, so it is not the pick if omega-3 is your main goal. Count its vitamins A and D if you also take a multivitamin, and the label says to check with your doctor first if you are pregnant or nursing.

7. Switch Ultra Fish Oil: best high strength

Switch Ultra Fish Oil is the most concentrated fish oil on this page. Each 1,000 mg capsule has 800 mg of omega-3, made up of 500 mg EPA, 250 mg DHA and 50 mg DPA, from small Norwegian fish (anchovy, sardine and/or mackerel). That is two and a half times the EPA and DHA of a standard softgel, and it gives the most EPA and DHA for your money of our picks.

  • Per capsule: 500 mg EPA, 250 mg DHA and 50 mg DPA (800 mg omega-3)
  • 400 IU of vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopherol) per capsule
  • 120 capsules, 120 serves, in a fish gelatin capsule
  • Molecularly distilled and tested for heavy metals and contaminants, according to Switch

Worth knowing: Each capsule also adds 400 IU of vitamin E, which adds up if you take more than one a day or use another product with vitamin E. Switch's website does not list daily directions, so follow the label on your tub.

How we chose

We ranked fish oil and omega-3 products by units sold at Supps247 stores and online over the last six months, combined sizes of the same product, and kept only products that are live on our website and in stock. We left out products we could not check against a brand label or label image. EPA, DHA and other label facts were checked against brand labels in October 2026. Value tiers come from price per gram of EPA and DHA (total omega-3 where the label does not split them) at the time of writing: $ is cheaper than most picks on this page, $$ is in the middle and $$$ is premium. Brands do not pay for placement.

How to choose a fish oil or omega-3 supplement

Compare EPA and DHA, not the oil. The 1,000 mg on most labels is the weight of the oil. The NIH ODS says a typical fish oil supplement provides about 1,000 mg of fish oil containing 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA. On this page, EPA plus DHA ranges from 170 mg per softgel (cod liver oil) to 750 mg per capsule (Switch Ultra), so the same number of capsules can give very different amounts.

Food first. EPA and DHA come mainly from fish and seafood such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring and sardines. The NIH ODS notes the body converts only very small amounts of the plant omega-3 ALA into EPA and DHA. A 2016 analysis of national nutrition survey data found only about 20% of Australians meet the recommended long-chain omega-3 intakes (see the FAQs), so a supplement mainly helps if you rarely eat fish.

Work out the daily cost. Labels here range from one softgel a day (Rule 1, NOW Cod Liver Oil) to two softgels twice daily (NOW Omega-3), so compare the EPA and DHA at the dose you will actually take and how long the bottle lasts.

Stay within sensible amounts. The NIH ODS notes that high doses may cause bleeding problems with blood-thinning medicines, and that 4 g a day for several years slightly increased the risk of an irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation) in people with or at high risk of heart problems. Stick to the label unless your doctor advises otherwise.

For training. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) places fish oil in Group B of its Sports Supplement Framework, meaning emerging scientific support that deserves further research. FAQs

What is the best fish oil or omega-3 supplement in Australia?

It depends on how many capsules you want to take. NOW Omega-3 1000 mg is our best seller and a tested all-rounder, Rule 1 Fish Oil is the simplest one-a-day option, and Switch Ultra Fish Oil gives the most EPA and DHA per capsule of our picks, at 750 mg. Whichever you choose, compare the EPA and DHA you get per day on the label rather than the fish oil weight on the front.

How much omega-3 should I take a day?

Australia's Nutrient Reference Values give an adequate intake for EPA, DHA and DPA combined of 160 mg a day for men and 90 mg for women, with suggested dietary targets of 610 mg and 430 mg. Those figures include food, so count the oily fish you eat. The NIH ODS notes the US FDA considers up to 5 g a day of EPA and DHA from supplements safe, but stick to the label unless your doctor advises more.

Is krill oil better than fish oil?

Not clearly. Krill oil carries its omega-3s mainly as phospholipids, and the NIH ODS says some studies suggest slightly better absorption while others do not. Per serve it usually has less EPA and DHA: the Antarctic Krill Oil by Futurebiotics we stock gives 120 mg EPA and 80 mg DHA in two softgels, plus 200 mcg of astaxanthin, compared with 300 mg in one standard fish oil softgel. Krill is a shellfish, so avoid it if you have a shellfish allergy.

When is the best time to take fish oil?

With a meal. NOW Omega-3, Rule 1 and NOW Cod Liver Oil all direct you to take their softgels with food, and splitting the dose across meals, as the AllMax and 21st Century labels allow, can make it easier to stick with. The NIH ODS lists the usual side effects as mild, including a fishy taste, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, an upset stomach or loose bowels.

Can I take fish oil if I take medication?

Check with your doctor or pharmacist first. The NIH ODS notes that high doses of omega-3s may cause bleeding problems when taken with blood-thinning medicines. The 21st Century label also asks you to talk to a healthcare provider before use if you take any medication, are planning a medical procedure, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a medical condition.

Does fish oil help with training and recovery?

The evidence is still emerging. The Australian Institute of Sport places fish oil in Group B of its Sports Supplement Framework, which means emerging scientific support that deserves more research, and it suggests use within research or clinical monitoring. Think of fish oil as a way to cover EPA and DHA when you rarely eat fish, not as a proven performance booster.
