    Under $50 pre-workouts compared

Pre-workout Type Caffeine Price Full serves Cost per full serve
    Fresh Pre-Workout Stimulant About 180 mg per scoop, 360 mg per 2 scoops $30.00 20 (40 scoops) $1.50
    Axe & Sledge Intake Stimulant 150 mg per scoop, 300 mg per 2 scoops $49.95 20 (40 scoops) $2.50
ProSupps Hyde Nightmare High stim 300 mg per scoop $49.95 30 $1.67
ON Essential Amino Energy Low caffeine 100 mg per serve $49.95 30 $1.67
    GAT Sport Pumptropic Stim-free None (labelled stimulant-free) $34.95 20 (40 single scoops) $1.75
    Inspired BBD Pump Stim-free None (labelled non-stim) $49.95 20 $2.50
AfterDark EPO Pump Stim-free None listed $39.95 About 20 $2.00

Cost per full serve is the tub price divided by the full serves on the label. Fresh and Intake are dosed at two scoops for a full serve, so one scoop costs half as much and gives half the caffeine. Hyde Nightmare is under $50 in some flavours only.

    Best value overall: Fresh Pre-Workout

Fresh Pre-Workout is $30.00 for 40 scoops, which works out to about $0.75 a scoop at the time of writing. Each 8 g scoop lists 3 g of L-citrulline, 1.6 g of beta-alanine, 1 g of betaine and about 180 mg of caffeine, and the full two-scoop serve doubles all of that. It was one of our best-selling pre-workouts over the last six months, and the one-scoop option makes it easy to start low. Read more in our Fresh pre-workout guide.

Best for controlling caffeine: Intake and Amino Energy

Axe & Sledge Intake gives 150 mg of caffeine per scoop, so one scoop is a moderate dose and two scoops is a full 300 mg serve. The full serve also lists 8 g of L-citrulline, 3.2 g of beta-alanine and 2.5 g of betaine, which is a solid dose for the price.

If you only want a light lift, Optimum Nutrition Essential Amino Energy has 100 mg of caffeine and 5 g of amino acids per serve, at $49.95 for 30 serves. It is closer to a coffee than a full pre-workout, which suits early sessions or people who are sensitive to caffeine.

Best strong pre-workout under $50: Hyde Nightmare

ProSupps Hyde Nightmare has 300 mg of caffeine per scoop from green tea extract, caffeine anhydrous and coffee extract, plus 4 g of L-citrulline and 2.5 g of beta-alanine. At $1.67 a serve in the flavours priced at $49.95, it is the strongest stimulant option in this list. Start with half a scoop.

Best stim-free under $50: EPO Pump, Pumptropic and BBD Pump

If you train at night or want to avoid caffeine, a pump product gives you the citrulline without the stimulants. AfterDark EPO Pump lists 6 g of L-citrulline and 750 mg of arginine per scoop, with no caffeine or beta-alanine, so there is no tingle. Ingredient note: EPO Pump also contains huperzine A (from Huperzia serrata), so check with your GP first if you take regular medication.

Inspired BBD Pump lists 6 g of L-citrulline, 3.2 g of beta-alanine, 2 g of taurine, 2 g of arginine nitrate and 2 g of creatine nitrate per scoop. GAT Sport Pumptropic is labelled stimulant-free. See more in our stim-free pre-workouts guide or browse all stimulant-free pre-workouts.

    Caffeine safety on a budget

Cheap does not mean mild. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers single doses of up to 200 mg, and up to 400 mg a day from all sources, safe for most healthy adults. One scoop of Fresh (about 180 mg) or Intake (150 mg) sits under that single-dose figure, but a full two-scoop serve of either (360 mg or 300 mg) or a full scoop of Hyde Nightmare (300 mg) is above it. The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) says caffeine helps performance at about 3 to 6 mg per kg of body weight, and that more mainly adds side effects. Count your coffee and energy drinks, start with half a serve, and keep stimulant pre-workouts at least six hours away from bed. One sleep study found caffeine taken six hours before bed still cut sleep by about an hour.

If you are under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, have a heart condition or high blood pressure, or take regular medication, talk to your GP before using a stimulant pre-workout. Our pre-workout caffeine guide has more detail.

    FAQs

What is the best cheap pre-workout in Australia?

At the time of writing, Fresh Pre-Workout is our best value pick, with the lowest cost per scoop in this list and about 180 mg of caffeine per scoop. For a lower dose, Axe & Sledge Intake gives 150 mg per scoop. EPO Pump, GAT Pumptropic and BBD Pump are the best caffeine-free options under $50.

Is a cheap pre-workout as good as an expensive one?

Often, yes. What matters is the dose of the main ingredients, such as caffeine, citrulline and beta-alanine, and those are printed on the label. A budget tub with sensible doses can do the same job as a premium one. Compare the label and the cost per serve, not the price of the tub or the brand name.

How much caffeine is too much in a pre-workout?

EFSA considers single doses of up to 200 mg, and up to 400 mg a day from all sources, safe for most healthy adults. Some budget pre-workouts have 300 mg in one scoop, so start with half a serve and count your coffee and energy drinks too. If you are pregnant, under 18 or take medication, talk to your GP first.

Why are some pre-workouts under $50 right now?

Prices move with stock levels and brand promotions, so a tub that is under $50 today may not be next month. Check the product page before you buy, and look at our specials and under $50 collections for what is good value this week. Members can also use our price match guarantee on full-priced items, conditions apply.

    Is a stim-free pre-workout worth buying?

It can be if you train at night, are sensitive to caffeine, or already drink coffee. Stim-free products such as EPO Pump and BBD Pump focus on citrulline and other pump ingredients, so you get the drink without the buzz or the effect on your sleep. They will not give you the energy kick that caffeine does.
