Shilajit: Benefits, How to Spot Fake Resin and How to Take It

Table of Contents

Shilajit is a tar-like mineral resin from mountain rock, used for centuries in Ayurvedic tradition. Human research is limited to a few small studies. The biggest risk is quality: raw or poorly processed resin can contain heavy metals, so buy from a brand that provides a third-party lab certificate.

    What is shilajit?

Shilajit forms slowly from plant material in rock layers, mainly in the Himalayas. It contains fulvic acid and trace minerals. It is sold as a resin, as capsules and powders, and as gummies made from shilajit extract.

    What does the research show?

    • Testosterone: in a 2016 study by Pandit and colleagues, healthy men aged 45 to 55 who took 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day for 90 days had a significant rise in total testosterone compared with placebo. It was one small study using one purified extract.
    • Energy and fatigue: there are a handful of small studies, often using branded extracts. More independent research is needed.
    • Everything else: many online claims, such as anti-ageing or brain health, rest on animal studies or tradition rather than human trials.

How to spot fake or low-quality shilajit

Popular home tests, such as stretching the resin, burning it, or watching it dissolve in water, do not prove purity or safety. They cannot detect heavy metals or other contaminants. A 2008 study in JAMA found about one in five Ayurvedic products bought online contained detectable lead, mercury or arsenic. Instead, look for:

    • A third-party lab certificate that covers heavy metals, not just fulvic acid content.
    • A clear origin and processing description (purified or filtered).
    • A named brand and supplier in Australia, rather than unlabelled resin from a marketplace.
    • Realistic claims. Be wary of products promising cures.

    How to take shilajit

    1. Use the spoon supplied to take a pea-sized amount of resin (about 200 to 350 mg, depending on the brand).
    2. Dissolve it in warm water, tea or milk, or let it melt under your tongue.
    3. Take it once a day, at the same time, following your label.
    4. Gummies are simpler: take the number on the label, usually two.

Do not take shilajit if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and speak to your doctor first if you take medication, have a medical condition, or have high iron levels.

    FAQs

What are the benefits of shilajit?

The best-known study found purified shilajit raised total testosterone in healthy men aged 45 to 55 over 90 days. Other claimed benefits, such as more energy, are supported by a few small studies or by tradition, and need more research.

How can I tell if shilajit is real?

Home tests such as stretching, burning or dissolving the resin cannot show whether it is pure or safe. Buy from a known brand that provides a third-party lab certificate covering heavy metals.

How much shilajit should I take a day?

Follow your label. Resin is usually a pea-sized amount, about 200 to 350 mg, once a day. The main human study used 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day.

Is shilajit resin better than gummies?

Resin is the traditional form and usually contains only shilajit. Gummies are easier to take but use an extract and may include other ingredients, such as ashwagandha in the gummies we stock. Choose the form you will take consistently, from a tested brand.
