What is in R1 Protein
The Chocolate Fudge ingredient list is short: a protein blend of whey protein isolate and hydrolysed whey protein isolate, then cocoa, natural and artificial flavours, sucralose, salt, acesulfame potassium, and soy and sunflower lecithin. Rule 1 says it leaves out whey concentrate, creamers and gums.
Isolate and hydrolysate, in plain terms. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) protein fact sheet explains that whey isolate is filtered further than concentrate, to about 90% protein, with minimal carbohydrate and fat. Hydrolysate is whey broken into shorter pieces, often called pre-digested, with claims of faster uptake. The AIS also says the practical difference between whey forms is minimal, with a 30 g serve of any form giving roughly 21 to 27 g of protein. So the main reasons to choose an isolate are leaner numbers on the panel and less lactose.
Amino acids. Rule 1 states each scoop provides 12 g of essential amino acids, including 6 g or more of BCAAs, all naturally occurring. The AIS notes whey is naturally high in BCAAs, including leucine.
Lactose. Rule 1 points people who avoid lactose to a 100% whey isolate, saying it has close to no lactose. It is still a milk product, so it is not suitable for a milk allergy.
Who it suits
- People tracking macros who want a shake with 0 g of sugars and 0.5 g of fat per scoop.
- People who find concentrate-based shakes heavy because of lactose.
- Daily users who want bigger packs: 71 serves in the 5 lb tub, or the 10 lb bag.
- Anyone after variety: we list 23 flavours.
Who should check first
- Milk or soy allergy: the label says it contains milk and soy.
- Lactose intolerance: Rule 1 says whey isolate has close to no lactose, but this product is not labelled lactose free.
- Weight loss: the front label says to use it as a food supplement only, not for weight reduction.
- Pregnancy: Rule 1 advises checking with your GP.
- Medical conditions or medication: talk to your doctor or dietitian before raising your protein intake.
- Drug-tested athletes: check Sport Integrity Australia guidance and the certifier databases yourself.
How to use R1 Protein
Rule 1's directions: mix about one scoop with 6 to 8 oz (about 180 to 240 ml) of cold water, milk or your favourite drink, in a shaker or in a glass with a spoon. For variety, blend it with fruit or mix it into cereal or yoghurt. Milk adds its own protein, carbohydrate and fat.
Rule 1 says you can use it any time: before or after workouts, in the morning or between meals. The AIS suggests about 15 to 30 g of protein at each of 3 to 5 meals and snacks a day, and says a serve of 20 to 40 g covers most sports nutrition needs, so one scoop fits well. See how much protein you need a day.
How it compares
- Rule 1 Whey Blend: includes whey concentrate, with 24 g of protein, 4 g of carbohydrate and 2.5 g of fat per 35 g scoop of Chocolate Fudge. It suits people who are fine with some lactose and want an everyday blend.
- Dymatize ISO100: also a hydrolysed whey protein isolate, so it is the closest like-for-like. Compare scoop size, flavours and the panel for your flavour.
- Rapid Vegan Plant Protein: a plant protein for people who avoid dairy.

R1 Protein review: our verdict
R1 Protein is an easy recommendation if lean numbers and variety are your priorities. Each Chocolate Fudge scoop gives 25 g of protein, 0 g of sugars and 0.5 g of fat from whey isolate and hydrolysed isolate only, with no concentrate, and you can choose from 23 flavours and three sizes up to a 10 lb bag. It suits people tracking macros, daily users and anyone who finds concentrate-based shakes heavy. The trade-offs: it contains milk and soy, it is not labelled lactose free, and if a little lactose is fine for you, Rule 1 Whey Blend does the same everyday job with slightly more carbohydrate and fat.
FAQs
How much protein is in R1 Protein?
25 g per 32 g scoop on the Chocolate Fudge label, with 3 g of carbohydrate and 0.5 g of fat. Values vary slightly between flavours; Vanilla Creme, for example, uses a 30 g scoop.
How many serves are in each size?
The 2 lb (910 g) Milk Chocolate tub is labelled 28 serves and the 5 lb (2.27 kg) Chocolate Fudge tub 71 serves. For the 10 lb bag, check the serve count printed on the pack, as scoop weights vary by flavour.
Is R1 Protein lactose free?
It is not labelled lactose free. Rule 1 says whey isolate has close to no lactose, which is why it suggests isolate for people avoiding lactose, but it still comes from milk.
Can I use R1 Protein for weight loss?
The front label says to use it as a food supplement only and not for weight reduction. If weight loss is your goal, talk to a dietitian about your whole diet; a shake can fit in, but it is not a weight-loss product.
Should I choose R1 Protein or Rule 1 Whey Blend?
Choose R1 Protein for the leanest numbers and less lactose. Choose Whey Blend if some lactose is fine for you; per scoop it gives 24 g of protein against 25 g, with a little more carbohydrate and fat.
