    What is in Protein Delicious

A three-way whey blend. The ingredient list starts with a whey protein blend of whey protein isolate, whey protein hydrolysate and whey protein concentrate. Next Generation explains that concentrate is slightly less refined than isolate and keeps a little more fat and carbohydrate, which adds depth and fullness, while isolate gives a lighter texture and quick mixing. The result is a shake the brand describes as creamy and milkshake-like.

Protein per serve. Chocolate, Triple Choc Fudge and Choc Coconut list 24 g of protein per 28 g serve, Vanilla lists 23 g and Choc Salted Caramel lists 21.6 g. Sports Dietitians Australia (SDA) says a single serve of about 20 to 25 g of protein has been shown to maximally stimulate muscle protein synthesis, so every flavour sits in or close to that range. SDA also notes most athletes can reach their daily protein targets from food, so a shake is a convenient top-up rather than a must. Work out your own target with our guide to how much protein per day.

Other ingredients. Flavours, cocoa powder (in the chocolate flavours), salt, sweeteners (954, 952), vegetable gum (415), emulsifier (322) and inulin. Choc Coconut also contains coconut powder.

Where the whey comes from. Next Generation says its whey is grass fed and sourced from suppliers in Victoria, Australia and New Zealand, including Murray Goulburn and Fonterra, and that Protein Delicious is Australian owned, made and packaged.

Flavour differences. Choc Salted Caramel is the outlier. Per serve it has a little less protein, more carbohydrate (4.8 g) and more sodium (180 mg) than the other flavours. If you want the leanest numbers, Chocolate is the pick.

    Who it suits

    • People who want a creamy, milkshake-style protein shake with around 24 g of protein.
    • Anyone topping up protein after training or between meals.
    • People who add protein to smoothies, oats or baking, which Next Generation says it suits.
    • People who prefer an Australian-made whey.

    Who should check first

    • Milk allergy: Protein Delicious is made from whey, which comes from milk, so it is not suitable.
    • Lactose intolerance: Next Generation says it contains small amounts of lactose and recommends checking with your healthcare provider before use.
    • Coeliac disease: the panel lists 0 g of gluten and the brand describes it as gluten free. Still check the current label on your pack before use.
    • Pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18: talk to your doctor or a dietitian before using a protein supplement.
    • Kidney disease or a doctor-advised protein limit: check with your doctor before adding protein shakes.
    • Drug-tested athletes: check Sport Integrity Australia guidance and the certifier databases yourself. See our guide to supplements for drug-tested athletes.

    How to use Protein Delicious

    • Place 2 scoops (28 g) into a shaker with about 200 ml of water or milk.
    • Shake until fully dissolved.

Milk makes a thicker shake but adds its own protein, carbohydrate, fat and lactose, so choose water if you want to keep it lean.

For timing, SDA suggests including protein at all meals and snacks across the day, and a serve of about 20 to 30 g after exercise. One 28 g serve after training or between meals fits that well.

    How it compares

    • Primabolics Iso-Ripped: an isolate-only powder (instantised and hydrolysed whey protein isolate) with 25 g of protein and 2.1 g of carbohydrate per 30 g scoop, sweetened with stevia.
    • Legit Whey Isolate: lists 25.1 g of protein and 0.6 g of carbohydrate per 32.5 g serve, according to Legit Supplements. The lowest carbohydrate of these three options.
    • Rapid Vegan: a plant-based protein made with organic pea and brown rice protein, for people avoiding dairy.

    Protein Delicious review: our verdict

Protein Delicious is built around taste and texture, blending isolate, hydrolysate and concentrate into a creamy, milkshake-style shake. Most flavours give about 24 g of protein per 28 g serve, the whey is Australian-made, and there are two sizes up to 71 serves. It suits everyday shakes, smoothies, oats and baking. The trade-off is that it is not the leanest option. It contains some concentrate and small amounts of lactose, and Choc Salted Caramel has less protein and more carbohydrate than the rest. If lean numbers come first, Legit Whey Isolate or Iso-Ripped fits better.
