What is in SiS GO Caffeine Gels

Carbohydrate. Each gel is mostly water and maltodextrin (33% of the gel), giving 22 g of carbohydrate. That works out to 37 g of carbohydrate per 100 mL. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) sports gel fact sheet describes typical gels at 65 to 75 g per 100 mL, and notes that a small number of gels labelled isotonic are made to be taken without water.

The same AIS fact sheet sets out how much carbohydrate helps during exercise: none is needed for sessions under 45 minutes, 30 to 60 g an hour suits endurance exercise of 1 to 2.5 hours, and up to 90 g an hour suits events longer than about 2.5 to 3 hours. One gel covers 22 g of that.

Caffeine. The AIS caffeine fact sheet says small doses of about 2 to 3 mg per kg of body mass (around 200 mg) are effective for performance, and that caffeine can work when taken before exercise, spread through it, or late in exercise as fatigue sets in. It also notes that sports foods such as gels typically carry 20 to 100 mg per serve, so the 150 mg Double Espresso gel is a stronger option than most.

Everything else. Both gels add vitamins B6 and B12 and folic acid, plus two sweeteners (acesulfame K and sucralose).

    Who it suits

    • Runners, cyclists and triathletes doing sessions longer than about an hour who already fuel with gels.
    • Athletes who want caffeine late in a race in the same sachet as their carbs.
    • People who prefer not to take water with every gel.
    • Berry for a smaller 75 mg dose; Double Espresso only for those who know caffeine sits well with them.

    Who should check first

    • Pregnant or breastfeeding: FSANZ advises no more than 200 mg of caffeine a day from all sources. SiS states the Double Espresso gel is not intended for pregnant women.
    • Under 18: SiS says the Double Espresso gel is not intended for children or under 16s. FSANZ advises under 18s to have no more than 3 mg of caffeine per kg of body weight in a single serving.
    • Caffeine sensitivity, heart conditions or medication: the AIS lists a faster heart rate, anxiety and poorer fine motor control as possible side effects. Check with your GP first.
    • Evening sessions: the AIS notes caffeine can affect sleep even at low intakes, and about half is still in your blood around 5 hours later.
    • Drug-tested athletes: see the FAQ below and our guide to supplements for drug-tested athletes.

How to use SiS GO Caffeine Gels

SiS suggests one gel about 30 minutes before intense exercise, then one or two more towards the end of a long session when you need a boost in alertness. For short, high-intensity events, the SiS Australia Double Espresso listing suggests one gel an hour before, and no more than 2 Double Espresso gels a day in longer events.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) advises adults to have no more than 400 mg of caffeine a day from all sources and no more than 200 mg in a single serving. Two Double Espresso gels at once would be 300 mg, so space them out, and count coffee and pre-workout too. If you are new to caffeine gels, start with half a serve, such as half a Berry gel in training. Read more in our guide to how much caffeine is safe.

The AIS advises practising gels in training to check how your gut copes. Isotonic gels do not replace drinking, so plan your fluids too, especially on hot days (see our hot weather hydration guide).

    How it compares

    • SiS GO Isotonic Energy Gels: the same 22 g of carbohydrate per 60 mL gel, without caffeine. Handy for most of your fuelling, with a caffeine gel saved for later.
    • Cyborg Sport HBCD: an unflavoured carbohydrate powder made from waxy corn starch that you mix into a drink, with no caffeine. It suits people who would rather drink their carbohydrate than carry gels.

SiS caffeine gel review: our verdict

SiS GO Caffeine Gels are a dependable pick for runners and riders who already use gels and want carbohydrate and caffeine in one sachet, with no water needed. The two strengths are the standout: Berry's 75 mg suits a first try or an early boost, while Double Espresso's 150 mg is stronger than most gels, so save it for experienced caffeine users late in a long event. The trade-offs are volume and caffeine stacking. You swallow 60 mL for 22 g of carbohydrate, and two Double Espresso gels close together reach 300 mg. Practise in training, and use plain GO Isotonic gels for most of your fuelling.

When should I take a caffeine gel?

SiS suggests one gel about 30 minutes before intense exercise and one or two more towards the end of a long session. The AIS notes caffeine can work before, during or late in exercise, so test your timing in training first.
