    What is in Animal Pak

Animal says Animal Pak packs over 85 ingredients into a series of complexes. The Supplement Facts panel on the Animal website lists these amounts per 2-pack serve:

    • Vitamins and minerals: Animal counts 25, including 1,000 mg of vitamin C, 100 mcg of vitamin D, 80 mg of vitamin B6, 120 mcg of vitamin K, 30 mg of zinc, 400 mg of magnesium and 650 mg of calcium. There is no iron on the panel.
    • Protein complex: 2,190 mg of whey protein blend and 2,430 mg of a beef and liver blend, which is where the 4 g of protein per serve comes from.
    • Performance complex: 750 mg of Eleutherococcus senticosus root, 500 mg of taurine, 250 mg of choline bitartrate, 125 mg of inositol and 25 mg of carnitine.
    • Liver, antioxidant and digestive complexes: milk thistle, turmeric, the Spectra fruit and vegetable blend, spirulina, chlorella, grape seed extract, bromelain, papain and AstraGin.
    • Energy and focus complex: 300 mg of L-tyrosine plus 100 mg each of green tea leaf extract, ginkgo biloba and cocoa bean powder.

So what does a multivitamin actually do for you? The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) says a multivitamin can help you get recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals when you cannot get enough from food alone, but it cannot take the place of eating a variety of foods. Animal's statements about recovery, immunity and performance are the brand's own claims.

Check your vitamin B6 and vitamin D totals

Australia's Nutrient Reference Values set an adult upper level of intake of 50 mg a day for vitamin B6 and 80 mcg a day for vitamin D. Two packs give 80 mg of B6 and 100 mcg of vitamin D, so one pack gives about half: 40 mg and 50 mcg. The TGA warns that vitamin B6 can cause peripheral neuropathy (tingling, burning or numbness, usually in the hands and feet), that this can happen at doses under 50 mg, and that you should add up the B6 in every product you take. ODS also notes a multivitamin can raise your chance of getting too much of some nutrients if you also take other supplements or eat fortified foods.

    Who it suits

    • Adults who train regularly and want one daily pack instead of several separate bottles.
    • People who find pre-portioned packs easier to remember at home, at work or in a gym bag.
    • Anyone who wants a multivitamin to sit alongside a balanced diet, not replace it.

    Who should check first

    • Pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy: speak to your doctor first. Animal Pak is not a pregnancy multivitamin, and NCCIH (part of the US National Institutes of Health) says ginkgo may be unsafe during pregnancy.
    • Taking medication, especially blood thinners such as warfarin: ODS advises talking to your healthcare provider before taking a multivitamin that contains vitamin K, and NCCIH says ginkgo may increase the risk of bleeding in people taking anticoagulant drugs.
    • Already taking vitamin B6, vitamin D, zinc or magnesium: add up your daily totals across every product, including greens powders and single vitamins.
    • Medical conditions or under 18: check with your doctor. This is an adult training product.
    • Allergies: the label says it contains milk and soy, and it is made on equipment that processes milk, soy, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat and sesame.
    • Drug-tested athletes: Animal Pak contains many herbal extracts. Check Sport Integrity Australia guidance and the HASTA and Informed Sport databases yourself, and read our guide to supplements for drug-tested athletes.

    How to use Animal Pak

Animal's directions are to take one pack a day with a meal, such as breakfast, with plenty of water. If you are in hard training or on a strict competition diet, Animal suggests two packs a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Animal also says there is no need to cycle it.

The panel's serve is 2 packs, and Animal's own FAQ answers the question "can I just take 1 pack?" with "one pack is great for most people". Given the vitamin B6 figures above, one pack a day is the simplest place to start. At one pack a day, the 30-pack size lasts 30 days and the 44-pack size lasts 44 days. Always follow the directions on the box you buy.

    How it compares

    • Primabolics Everyday Health Wellness Formula + Greens is a one-scoop daily powder rather than tablets. Primabolics lists 2.5 g of organic greens and 5 billion CFU of LactoSpore probiotics per scoop, plus vitamins and minerals including 5 mg of vitamin B6.
    • Beast Labs Nutrition D3 + K2 is a vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 product rather than a full multivitamin. If you take it with Animal Pak, count the vitamin D from both against the 80 mcg upper level.
